Vac for Kapex
« on: February 19, 2019, 05:11 PM »
Recently purchased a Kapex.  So far, I have it connected to my CT Midi but it’s getting tiring switching hose connection between the Kapex and my track saw and other tools.  Thinking of getting a second vac.  Is a shop vac a good option to dedicate to the Kapex along with a ivac switch or better off investing in another Festool vac like CT26/36 for track saw, domino, sander and leave the Midi for the Kapex?  Saw a shop vac at Lowe’s for $99 and was wall mountable with a small foot print

A shop vac alone is not good enough unless the Kapex is used only occasionally.

I use a Sears shop vac with a dust deputy, and an iVac (30 amp configured). 36mm is a must for max dust extraction. I attach a narrow hose to the hose end when using the dust system with the Domino joiner, or PRO sanders.

Dedicated CT Mini might be the best idea. You can find them used for pretty great prices. Having the auto start feature is such a time saver and the Mini gives you this in the most optimized package, IMO.

Personally I would keep a Festool CT working with the Kapex for all the reasons mentioned previously plus all the electronics work in a systematic way.

You might want to even look for a used CT to fill out your needs.  One thing one of my customers just mentioned to me last week was "Wow!  That is quiet."  Screaming shop vacs are not on my Christmas wishlist anymore.

As a previous owner of a CT26 and a Mini, I agree on the noise observation. It is imperative that good ear protection is used when operating a shop vac with the Kapex. I have found this the best protection after using half a dozen of different types of ear protection over the years: http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=53610&cat=1,42207,42227,53610

This one is also good, but it screens out the radio music: http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=76327&cat=1,42207

CT Sys good for Dedicated Kapex usage?  I’m a home DIY, so Kapex not used daily and constantly.  Can probably mount the ct sys in future miter station

You could use a CT Sys, but it would not be ideal.  Even with limited use the bag will fill quickly.  Airflow is a little less that the rolling vacs.  A mini or midi with a 5ft 36mm hose would be better.

The recurrent expense of the pricey bags wad one of the reasons why I switched to the shop vac/dust deputy solution.
