Title: Transit Van Fit Out - GunnyR
Post by: gunnyr on January 26, 2021, 09:27 PM
I also acquired a new Transit at the end of the year.  My intent was to place it in service only when the FitOut was complete ( @TSO Products ) .....  The weather did not cooperate though.

I had a job this week that required me to transport some sheet goods yesterday.  I would normally transport sheet goods on the top of my Silverado.  I had finished with the roof rack, ladder, and curbside shelving on my Transit.  So.... due to rain in the forecast the Transit made it's work debut yesterday!  I'm thinking the Silverado won't be back on the job site again.  Even though I only have about 30% of my planned shelving in the Transit was a huge improvement.  It was so nice to be off my knees crawling around in the back of a dark truck bed.  Some creative strapping allowed me to secure my Systainers and other supplies and I was able to get the job done!

The main feature I wanted was the ability to easily and quickly transport sheet goods.  On my PU sheet goods were always an undertaking to get everything secured on the roof.  I created slots on the edges of the uprights with my Domino and simply use clamps to hold the sheets upright.  Worked great!

Jeff, - I think you'll wonder why you waited as long as you have to make the move.
Enjoy the convenience and safety of your new ride!

I see the Blue Systainer got a secure place, too.

The slots for clamps are a fantastic way to secure your cargo! Will ratchet straps fit in there as well?  I like that you've got a whole lot of slots, good plan.

Pretty roomy in there. Good organization. That’s the medium roof Transit 144-148 Wheel base?

Plenty of room!  Yes, it is a 148" medium roof, with the Ecoboost engine.  I'm 6'0" and am able to stand comfortably inside it.  I can't dance around but I don't feel the least bit cramped.

Yes, straps will fit through them!

I used the 10mm Domino Bit and created a 3.5" slot.

The GRS is a big part of my workflow!  All the cross cuts for the shelving were made with the GRS, of course!

I knew pretty quick after I got the Silverado that a van was a better solution for me.  The issue I had with the Silverado is that it ran well, and it was paid for! [big grin]

@Kevin C.   thread about fitting out his Ford Transit Van as well (https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/workshops-and-mobile-vehicle-based-shops/ford-transit-fit-out/). we've been talking about the merits of the DeWalt 20v Vac and I realized I had no dedicated space for mine in my planning. The problem is now solved! I've also added strapping and fas-tex buckles to hold items in the shelves.

The Ridged boxes are held in place with small mortices's much like the Systainer boxes sit in.

Finally seeing progress on the drivers side today!  Everything is now painted and the uprights have been installed.  Tomorrow I'll finish attaching everything to the side and load up my systainers!

I'm very pleased with the way the domino slots are working out!  They are working well for ratchet straps, webbing with buckles, and Festool clamps used to hold sheet goods in place.

Gunny,

You're one of the few people I've seen that uses the Raaco service cases along with the Raaco 4 box rack.  I use them as well for cheap storage and have 1 x rack systainer which uses the same Raaco service cases.  I'd buy another couple of rack systainers but they're too expensive.

Nice fit out.  Just because people don't comment, doesn't mean they aren't looking.  Keep it up and thank you.

The Fit Out of the my Transit continues. Just finished the Driver's Side Systainer shelving and Level_Rail Storage box. The box has space for a pair of @Grev's 6' TrackTubes , several Stabila levels, 4 Festool Guide Rails, a Parf fence, and a @TSO Products GRS-16.

Having a van is a real game changer for me! we've had quite a snow storm here in Cincinnati this week.  I was able to transport and cut drywall inside the van this morning; avoiding the slushy mess outside!

Next up is the bulkhead area!

You can see the back spreader parts in my 4 Feb post.  The Transit has what would be the window frame running about 20" above the floor along the length of the side.  Ford fits that rail with a number of 8mm threaded inserts that, as you might suspect, are NOT where I needed them.  ::) I used 1/4-20 PlusNut Inserts (https://www.amazon.com/Steel-Cross-Nut-Pre-Bulbed-pre-bulbed/dp/B008VGWFAI/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3ZD3G7ZYHLUY&dchild=1&keywords=plusnuts+pre-bulbed&qid=1613134107&sprefix=plusnut%2Caps%2C172&sr=8-3) to add my own inserts as needed.  The issue is that the next highest place to attach to the shelving to the side is at the roof level....

I completed the Bulkhead storage box today and am very pleased with the results.  The box has dedicated spaces to hold my two Centipede work tables, the table tops, a piece of foam. a Ridgid outfeed support, and a pair of sawhorses.  In the bottom of the box is a 40" shallow drawer with dividers in it that is equipped with a sliding top so that the drawer can be used as a work surface.

The box itself provides a nice work surface inside the van.  The curbside sliding door area is where I keep my tool bag and table saw for easy access.

Next up is the installation of the house electric system.  I'll add a second battery to the van that is isolated from the vehicle battery.  The house battery will be used to power a small inverter to charge batteries as well as lighting in the cargo area of the van.

@gunnyr  Ive followed your build out from the start (and many others) but none as nicely set up...very nice work and organization!
I was wondering now that some weather has happened, how does the van handle and how’s the traction? Front wheel drive only or all wheel ? Do they come with AWD ?
Thanks

Thank you for your kind words.  Like others; my design utilizes ideas I've gathered from others over the years.  I have the major pieces in place now; as you know the devil is in the details!  I'm still finding supplies and tools that need storage places.  Today I installed a 2nd battery and an inverter.  I'll be adding cargo lighting next week.

I was out in some of the snow last week and pleased with the performance.  I also have a 4WD GMC Sierra that, if it were really bad, I'd drive it rather than the Transit.  I've also hit a point in my life where I'm not very tolerant of bad weather and am able to stay home rather than put up with it.

My Transit is a 250 Mid Roof, Standard length, 148" WB 2WD model with the EcoBoost engine.  I am very happy with the performance and cargo capacity.  The van is fun to drive and accelerates surprisingly quickly.  The Transit does come in an AWD model I believe.

As a Transit owner since 2015 (150 standard wheelbase 3.7 liter medium roof red) I admit to drooling over your setup.  Good choice on using the factory supplied holes or anchoring points.  The boron steel areas suck for attachment.

Perhaps one day I will make mine look as nice as yours.

Who am I kidding.  That isn't going to happen.

Rock on!

Thank you!  My intent was to not put my van into service until I had, at least, the side shelving installed.  Instead, I began to work out of it once the curbside shelving was done.  That turned out to work well as I learned a few things about my new work flow.  It was during  that first week that I learned I needed the bulkhead storage box.

Having a van has been a game changer for me.  I would tell every carpenter who needs a vehicle to think really hard before they buy a pick up!  The van allows much better tool access as well as secure cargo carrying capabilities.  Transporting material with my Silverado was always a challenge and often required advance planning.

Finished up on a couple pieces of my Fit Out today.  I completed my charging station and installed an articulating work station console in the cab.  The impetus for the console was to provide a place for the dog to ride (she was cramped riding on the passenger seat alone!)  As I got started on it I thought it would be cool to also create a writing/work surface.  The entire project was made from 1/2 Baltic Birch plywood and works very smoothly!

I also completed (mostly... [cool]) the electric system by adding a house battery, fuse block, and 600W inverter to provide lights and a battery charging station.    At some point I'll extend the lighting and 110v into the cab.  I also have a thought to add some exterior lighting.

Like others, I've found myself with multiple battery platforms. Milwaukee 12v, Dewalt 20 and 60v, as well as three different Festool battery types.  They all have earned a place in my kit but they take up a lot of room!

Excellent build. I never understood why more contractors don’t use vans. Pick up trucks [and I have one] are quite impractical, once you get past the “built tough” etc image thing.

Thank you!

I am 6'0", my business partner is 6'3"  He is looking to get the medium roof van also.  The high roof van adds enough height that I would struggle to use the roof rack.  I find the clearance to be just fine.  I can fully stand up in it and move about without issue.

Seems to me that the high roof would be best when your cargo requires it or if you were going to fit out the van as a camper.  Not sure if that answers your question, but for me I am glad that I did not get the high roof.  I had a Silverado with a mid roof cap on it for many years; I wish I had made the switch to a van years ago!

Not planning on a roof rack but it helps me a lot to know that a medium high roof which seems to be more common when it comes to used even accommodates even a taller guy than me.

On a somewhat funny side note I am also keep trying to find excuses not to make a switch to a van from my Silverado but I start to run out of excuses.

I can easily get a 20 sheets of 4x8 material inside the van or few 12' pieces of trim.  16' trim goes on the roof.  I find I use the rack more than I thought I would.

Here's a the link to the post when I was fitting out my Silverado. (https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/workshops-and-mobile-vehicle-based-shops/silverado-wt-build-out-53954/msg528592/#msg528592).  What I found was that my ability to carry material was limited at best and non-existent in poor weather.

The van gives me the ability to securely and safely carry both materials and tools.  I no longer have to crawl around in the dark trying to dig out seldom used tools.  Now I can get to all my tools without unloading half the vehicle!

Take a look at my 26 Jan post.  4x8 sheets fit easily even with the bulkhead and storage area.  10' stock fits easily the way I am configured.  Without the bulkhead I could get 16' trim in.  Mine is a 148" wheelbase but is not the extended version.

Your work, as always, top drawer. I am a mechanical engineer with a organizational sickness. Deeply screwed on this. I have no need for portability in my shop. However when I see these build outs, which are well done, I always start thinking about weight, CG and other issues with the added mass of the "built in weight" on top of the tool weight.. Is it a consideration? Does it even matter, fuel costs and so on. For example did you consider light weight materials, such as honeycomb panels instead of plywood. Much like aircraft cabin construction. This is more of a curiosity question. Considering you seem to be thorough you planning, I was wondering if it a consideration, or like most engineers, I am simply over thinking this. :)

Thank you for your kind words!

I did consider the CG and weight, but only in passing.  I quickly realized I was going to end up going down yet another rabbit hole.  I took the easy path and simply compared what I was doing to what I'd seen others do, and decided I was going to be ok.  I did choose a 3/4 ton chassis as I knew I was overloaded in my 1/2 ton pick up.  What I did not do was to get a vehicle weight at delivery.  Perhaps one day I'll stop and get a current weight and use the manufactures curb weight and then see where I'm at.  I will say that the van drives better today than it did when it was empty.

I've been using the set up for 4 months now and can say that I am very pleased with the layout in general.  I keep adding to my list of things to upgrade and finalize:
All in all, I used a very unscientific approach to the weight and weight distribution and seem to have gotten away with it at this point. [blink]

Thank you!  My goal was to provide interior lighting and charging.  I don't have enough power to run power tools, I figure if that's necessary I can bring a generator.

This is the Inverter (https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.6435-9/189206225_10159632304108385_6040053014630381981_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&ccb=1-3&_nc_sid=e3f864&_nc_ohc=z0BIVoNdC7UAX9-Qsnj&tn=L5C3QX1s28NmGV_Y&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=00e0b6bd86ad1d5ad97a37756ebd13f4&oe=60DD12A1) from Amazon.  Note that I also installed a separate house battery, isolator and fuse panel to distribute the house power.  There are lots of resources for Transit camper conversion and wiring schematics available.  Check out Pinterest and the Ford Transit USA Forum (https://www.fordtransitusaforum.com/)

Here is my list of electric supplies and materials (https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2PPD5C42F01L5?ref_=wl_share), it's not totally complete but includes the major components.

Drawers!

When I did the initial FitOut I knew that I wanted to include drawers in the middle bay of the curb side rack.  I wasn't sure exactly how they needed to be configured so I used Ridgid tool boxes to get started.  The Ridgid boxes are great but quickly getting tools and supplies was difficult.  Several tools were kept in the blow molded cases and some were stored behind other tools.  Now I can get to all those tools quickly and easily.

I settled on Paulk Style Drawers in two different sizes.  Several of the drawers have been fitted out for specific tools and others I have left open for the time being.

I used 1 inch webing, buckles and Tri Glides from Amazon to make up what I needed.

Tri Glides:
https://www.amazon.com/YGDZ-100Pcs-Plastic-Triglides-Slides/dp/B074MQCDDJ (https://www.amazon.com/YGDZ-100Pcs-Plastic-Triglides-Slides/dp/B074MQCDDJ)

FasTex Buckles:

I found it best to cut the webbing with red hot utility knife blade held in a pair of vise grips.

Rear Door Storage

The front left corner had become a catch-all for long objects that didn't fit any place else.  The space is mostly dead space but is primarily needed to store my ladder.  After battling (and losing) with retrieving my pry bar one too many times I finally moved much of the mess to the unused space on the rear doors.  I'm really afraid that all I've really accomplished is creating space to carry yet more 'stuff'! Do you care to go into anymore detail regarding your charging station?  I have been looking for something like what you put together for 6 months now and what you have is perfect.  I too would have 3-4 different charges but never thought out how to make it work.  So could you go into the specifics regarding the house battery, fuse, and power inverter.  I would really like to duplicate what you have.

Nevermind, i just saw one of your previous posts.  Is the house battery just for charging while the van is turned off?

The house battery will provide power both when the van is running and when it's turned off.  There is an isolator between the positive terminals of the house and vehicle batteries that prevent the house battery from drawing power from the vehicle when the voltage of the vehicle battery is below 14v or so.  What this means is that power will only flow from the vehicle battery to the house battery when the vehicle is running and prevent the house battery from draining the vehicle battery.

My house battery is located under the driver's seat, along side the vehicle battery.  Note that if you have a Transit and don't need/want a house battery that Ford has provided a fuse protected 60 amp power connection point at the rear of the driver's seat.  I recommend you do a search on the Ford Transit USA Forum (https://www.fordtransitusaforum.com/) for more ideas about house power to your van.  You'll find references to solid grounding points that Ford has provided as well as recommendations on attachment points.

I do not have any hardwired provisions to charge the house battery with shore or solar power at this point.  What I've found is that the house battery gets sufficiently charged for my needs during normal driving.  I've also mounted my chargers and power strip on a removeable board so that I can easily take the chargers into the job site.  I've also sometimes run an extension cord out to the vehicle to plug my charging station into.  My set up is not really strong enough to charge two of the DeWalt FlexVolt batteries at the same time using the inverter.  I've really not found that to be an issue.

No, I've not had any problems with M12 batteries falling out.  The holders have held up well also.  I keep thinking I want to mount them at an angle to recoup some wall space but haven't yet gotten to it.

I've made several updates to my 2020 Transit over the holidays.  I modified part of my racking to allow for the use of the Sys3 Rail System and a major upgrade to the electrical system.

Like many, I have all three generations of Systainers.  I now have enough to the Sys3 versions to make it worth updating my van shelving.  I chose to update the two bays closest to my parts bins to permit the installation of the Sy3 rails.  I had to increase the with of each of the two bays 9mm (18mm total)  to allow for the width of the rails.  Finding that 18mm was easy but executing it made it necessary to remove the entire drivers side shelving system.   The result was very much worth it!  The removal of the racking also allowed me to add shore power to my electrical system and run the wiring in the body cavity rather than leaving it exposed along the interior of the roof line.

I also added a long overdue storage platform for the space over my table saw.  I've been trying to put stuff on top of the saw since I first started storing the saw in the side door opening.  I used a bit of RV J-Channel and some plywood to make a removeable platform.  At one point I thought I'd make a box for the saw with a bin for my tool bag on top.  I think this is  a much more elegant, and flexible, solution!  I'm still playing around how to best secure the bag, for now it's just clipped to the grab handle.

Electrical

The upgrade to my house electric system was not so much functional as it is performance oriented.  There are two major areas of improvement.

The first is I added shore power.  This was primarily to add on a hardwired 110v battery charger for the house battery.  The removal of the drivers side racking gave me easy access to add the shore power port and run the wiring inside the wall rather than surface mount the wiring along the interior roof line.

The second area of improvement improved the performance and safety of the overall house power system.  I added a fused bus bar to separate the feeds to the inverter and general 12v circuits.  The bus bar also provided a way to easily connect the onboard 110v battery charger.  I also added a 12v DC to DC battery charger to more effectively charge the house battery when the engine is running.  In my first installation I used an isolator to provide charging to the house battery.  The issue with an isolator is that it feeds the house battery with whatever power it can.  The DC to DC Charger is a 3 stage charger that also isolates the house battery from the vehicle battery to prevent discharge of the vehicle battery.

I moved the power management and charging portion of the system to the area behind the drivers seat.  This has the advantage of keeping the equipment safe and provides me with easy access to 110v power in the cab.

The electric improvements would not have been possible without the superb videos from Nate at Explorist Live - DIY Campers (http://www.youtube.com/@EXPLORISTlife)

So, two years in to my Transit I can say that I am very happy with both the vehicle itself and the fit out.  I have a few more minor improvements in mind.  I'll likely add a few more drawers and some task lighting in the near future.

@gunnyr  - the level of seasoned refinement displayed in the most recent version of your van upfit really shows others who are still stuck with Pick-ups and low roof height vans what is possible.

Thanks for sharing here for everytone's benefit!

Keep it up while keeping everyone posted.

That's a fantastic looking, well equipped set up you have there. Great job.
Those high vans are so much better for this kind of thing.
Back when I first started in the cabinet shop (2004) we used ramp-door trailers. One big 24' model for hauling product and a couple of 16' that were equipped mostly for tools/supplies. They could also haul product, especially for smaller jobs, so a separate delivery wasn't necessary. It was never ideal though. Parking was always a problem, as well as getting installers who could actually handle a trailer.
Once the company stepped up to a 24' straight truck with a lift gate, the installers use regular vans and don't really have to deal with materials or products much anymore. They would all be envious of a system like that though.
What's in the TSO Systainer? since the GRS is hanging out on the wall.
Also, I see Match-fit clamps, but nothing obvious to use them with?

Thank you!  In my case I am generally able to haul materials, deliver product and work out to the van.  Only occasionally do I need to rent a straight truck for deliveries.  In my Silverado it seemed that I was limited to hauling tools or materials but not both....

The TSO Container holds my GRS 16 along with some TSO parallel guide bits and pieces.

As for the Matchfit clamps they are used primarily to clamp material using the slots in the shelving during transport.  I also have added a 2x4 to the top of my sawhorses that have Matchfit grooves on the top and sides along with a table saw sled with a grid of grooves that I used to hold work.  I'm always finding new used for the Matchfit clamps;   I've ground all of mine down so that they will fit into my Festool Guide Rails.

Oh ok, that makes sense.
I have only begun to experiment with the Match-Fit clamps.
So far all I have done is add the grooves to by bench legs to aid in the holding where I have Domino slots too and made a small tapering jig. I used to just make single-use tapering jigs and throw them away after use. Even I can't keep them all.
I know there is more I can do with them, just haven't had time.

This picture shows the slots in the shelving in use to secure sheet goods.  I like to use the screw type MatchFit clamps because they have a longer reach than my Festool Clamps.  I've secured as many as 10 sheets of plywood using combinations of clamps and straps.  The system also works very well for transporting doors!  Transporting sheet goods on edge makes it much easier to load and unload and leaves room for other cargo.

In this case I'm transporting some drywall for the much less fun part of trim carpentry.  I had the pleasure of ripping out a 4x8 section of tile back splash this morning, tomorrow I get to replace the drywall in preparation for the new backsplash.....
