This will be an ongoing post as I work on projects towards making the Untidy Shop the 'organised' Untidy Shop. You are welcome to post your thoughts as I post my different projects over the next months if not years. With an owner build and a renovation of another house, progress may be slower than others.

Project 1.
Moving recycled wood supplies from under house to shop and racking. (No photos)

Project 2.
Turning some recycled 70x19mm Merbau from old deck into counter top which will be part of out feed for compound saw bench/cabinets.

For this, I removed and drilled out deck nails and holes, planed and thicknessed each piece to 10mm, jointed 4 and then with 4mm dominoes jointed each set of 4 to create bench top of 180x420x45mm. Thicker wood was jointed on each long edge.

Finished top put through thicknesser. T55 and Rail used to square off edges. Then sanded from 120 to 400 grit using RO150, Makita 1/2 sheet and ETS150/3. Then used OrganOil but Festool Oil method of two coats using RO150 and green/white vilese.

Thinking may also wax and buff?

Project 3
Converting and restoring an old steel cabinet to create extra storage.

Festools
QF1400, CXS, RO150, ETS125 with interface pad, TS55, Parallel Guides and Domino 500.

Shelving
1. Sanded back with RO150 and Granat - 80 to 180 grit, then painted with Dulux water based metal paint in approx. Festool Green. Three coats by Brush.

2. Non structural 17mm ply cut to size with TS55, Rail and Parallel Guides. Then edge banded with Mountain Ash scrap using 4x20mm dominos and Titebond 111 glue. Banded edge rounded with router and then then whole shelf sanded to 320 grit with RO150 and ETS125 with interface pad. Finished with three coasts of Intergrain UltraFloor. Sanding with 320 grit between coats.

3. Ply shelf then screwed to metal shelves from underneath.

Cabinet
1. Doors removed permanently.
2. Cabinet shell sanded inside and out by hand and with RO150 to 180 grit.
3. Three coats of approx. Festool grey applied by brush.

Restored cabinet will house some Festool items, but mainly non Festools.

The process of making
the Untidy Shop a productive space but within a limited budget continues with -

Project 4
Making an assembly bench top.

Materials
2/ 2400X1200X17mm non structural pine ply [cheap but Australian Made].
1/ 42x19X4800mm Radiata pine.
1/ scrap of 90X45mm Baltic pine ripped and thicknessed to 30x40mm

Sellys Aquadhere Exterior Glue, Intergrain Pine Filler, OrganOil Hard Burnishing Oil, Festool Green and White Vilies, Festool Felt Pad, and Birregurra Heritage Wax .

Process
1. Two sheets of 17mm ply glued to make one sheet 34 mm thick.
2. Trimmed and cut to approx. 2200X830mm with TS55 and rails.
Waste kept for another project.
3. Edged with Pine using 4x20mm dominos cut 15mm into
ply at side edges.
4. Banded edge flush trimmed with EL65 and OF1400 router.
5. Holes filled and bench sanded to 320 grit with, in order,
RO150 (ROTEX), Makita 1/2 sheet and then ETS/3.
6. OrganOil Hard Burnishing Oil applied as per method for
Festool Surfix Oil with Vilies, but only one coat each side.
7. Bench left for 7 days, waxed top side and then buffed
using RO150 with Felt Pad.

Completed dimensions, 2270X870mm

Currently painting two old 800mm high wooden horses in Festool Grey and two 90x45X2400mm lengths of Mountain Ash in Festool Green to support bench.

Project 5 - the occasional MFT
As yet none of my bench tops have holes, so early last year I came up with a temporary solution which I often use when doing Domino work. That was the case this afternoon so I took some Photographs.

It is a 19mm MDF off cut, measuring 1200X300mm. As it is only used to hold work with the Multifunction Clamps and/Or FastFix Quick Clamps, the hole pattern was ruled up as accurately as possible and drilled with 2mm pilot holes then a 19mm drill bitt. I do not use it for Tracksaw work.

As can be seen I attach it to my assembly bench with some Besseys.

Hi, Looks nice Maybe it's just me, If I could find everything quickly in my shop it might get boring for me tho. Customers are banned in my work areas. If CSI did an investigation they would know what I made, ate, clothing worn, and type of injuries suffered. Be well

Guys, thanks for your interest.

Unity, the Untidy Shop is still that - Untidy. Certainly not a movie set. The times I get to be in it; are like you, project based rather than tidying time. Need to spend more time there at night. Unlike yours, there is very little blood for CSI types to find.

Billy - way ahead of you, small scraps go in a box for fire kindling next Winter.

Project 6 - Show Me Your Racks
Inspired by the replys to the Thread - 'Show Me Your Racks', and in particularly the racks shown by @Scott Burt, I proceeded to make these timber racks. This has been, to say the least, a slow burn project over the past 18 months.

Materials - 8 lengths of 90X45X2400mm MP10 Pine, 3 lengths of 70X45X2700mm MP10 Pine, left over laminated ply [see Project 4, Reply #7], 42X19mm Radiata Pine, 4X20 Beach Dominos, Zennith Galv. M10 180mm and 90mm Coach Bolts, Sellys Door and Trim Filler, Plastic Window Packers, Dulux 1 Step Sealer and Primer, Dulux Wash and Wear paint tinted as Festool Blue/Black and Festool Green, Bondall Cedar Varnish/Stain and Titebond 3 Glue.

Tools - C15, CXS, Metabo 750W Drill, Makita Compound Saw, T55 TrackSaw, Parralell Guides and Rail, Domino 500, R0150, ETS150/3, EHL65, Empire Level, Straight Edges, 17mm Ratcheting Spanner and Bessey Clamps.

Construction -
1. Eight MP10 90X45mm Pine lengths, machined and laminated to make 4 posts; each post knot filled, sanded, sealed and painted with Festool Blue/Black.
2. Three MP10 70X45mm Pine lengths, sealed then two painted with Festool
Blue/Black, the third in Festool Green.
3. Laminated ply, edged in 42X19mm Radiata pine using dominos and Titbond and trimmed with EHL65, then sanded, stain/varnished and cut to form support brackets. Pine edging reinforces timber stack edge.
4. Support Brakets then bolted to posts, 70X45 lengths bolted to steel workshop frame, then posts bolted to 70X45s.
5. Any detected 'out if true' caused by the workshop's metal framing was corrected with plastic window packers.

Some will note that there is room for more brackets; they will be made as other projects provide left over laminated ply.

@Untidy Shop, Even at the beginning, your shop was very neat >>> compared to mine. What happened to that bench top you showed wat back when?

I keep running into the same problem you mentioned. When I am in my shop, it is project time. Today, for instance, as all week has been, a great time to clean up my shop. however, i have a large yad project with a deadline of next Saturday. I have worked in the rain every day this past week. I think it has rained 7 out of the last 5 days. Every project i start just adds to the lack of space.

Oh well, it does get interesting.

So far you have been doing a good job. Thanks for posting.
@Scott Burt, Really, Scott, where is the clutter? I can see the floor and I even see the supervisors overhead.

Dont know if this helps or not. But, I usually clean my shop 1st thing in the morning. Gets the blood going and the mind flowing. Then i can start off the day wiyh a clean slate. Ill also do a couple quick straighten ups during the day,just to keep from getting to distracted.
My major fault is i have to blow my shop out a couple times a day. Cant stand dust and metal under my feet (i work in metal,too)
Now that im reading this back,i might have a problem

@Tinker we have finally got a handle on both of our shops for the moment. It took us the better part of two weeks, but there is now an echo when you speak in the spray shop.

Other than that, I have been busy working on the tree house and preparing that for an expansion.

@Tinker Always one of the FOG highlights reading your Posts. If you look at the images of the racks you will see laminated boards on the second and third shelf. These are my other 'slow burners'. One is laminated Otway BlackWood, the other laminated recycled Merbu. More to be completed of both.

The Merbu will be a longer version and companion to the bench top you referred to and will be the infeed bench for a Compound Saw Station. The earlier top will be the out feed.

The Blackwood is an experiement. The laminated lengths are being made from cabinet shorts I purchased from a cabinet maker 4 years ago who was closing shop and going to Western Australia to do mine work. My intension is to combine these with Blackwoid or Hoop Pine Ply to make a set of three folding doors for our house. I figure the longer this takes, the more stable the result.

@Untidy Shop I read both articles you referred to. I now will go down to my shop, mess it up a little more so I can figure out a creative way to sort it all out. As far as my desk is concerned, that is beyond any hope whatsoever. Another point of confusion, the articles mentioned that messy people are more creative. Evening people are more apt to be creative. Now I realize why I am sitting here replying to a discussion that I have no business even getting involved in. I am a morning person and a mess at the same time. It used to bother me, but, thanks to your recommended reading, I am now even more messed up.

Actually, some of the entries to your Untidy discussion I find are soooo tidy in comparison to my shop, I think I will have to go down and mess mine up a little more so I can get something done.

The following reasons are why
1. Height
The height of shipping container is 2.6m, or 9ft 6 in. the demountable storage I have bought is only 2m(6ft 8 in). where I placed the storage is right on the boundary of my property with my neighbour, at 2m high it is acceptable to my neighbour (our fence height is 1.8m), but not 2.6m high

2. Size
Shipping Container comes in standard 40ft/20ft/10ft. 40 is too big for me, 20 is still too big, 10 is too small. mine is 4m long

3. Mobility
I can disassemble my storage and take away with my trailer, but I cant do this with a shipping container.

4. Cost
where I am the 20ft shipping container is not cheap. its about the same price as the demountable storage I've bought.

Recently installed a florescent light with pull switch just above main workbench.

Invaluable over the last few days as I sand a laminated Otway sourced Blackwood* bench top [Underside shown - see future post].

Materials - Scrap 190X19X2400mm dressed Pine, Plug In Florescent Tube Set, Corded Pull Switch, Dulux Paint - [Oil based 3 in 1 Undercoat and Water Based Low Sheen top coat tinted in Festool Green], Chain and Screw Hooks.

Friendly electrical contractor.

Tools - Festool KS60, Rotex 150, C16, Paint Brush and Roller.
