Sjöbergs Elite 2000 - my precioussss
« on: November 14, 2016, 03:56 PM »
A long-held wish was recently fullfilled: i got a real workbench. And as i currently live by myself, i moved shop from a 9 sqm to a 18 sqm room. Now i even have the space to display my preciousss.
Just for today..

It really was a long-held (16years+)dream to own a good, heavy workbench of the scandinavian type. And it's configurable for lefties..! I'm one happy camper!

I had to use Excel to figure out what 18 square meters is.  About 185 square feet.  10x18 feet.  Good size.  Americans use square feet for measuring areas of rooms/houses.

SWEET bench [smile]

Your wall strangely made me think that "Workshop Wallpaper" could be a really cool idea. Imagine wall paper that looked like an insane collection of clamps or similar ... great for a laugh [wink]

To be honest: i don't really dare using it. The beech feels soo smooth...to me it feels more like furniture, not a pedestrian Workbench. I recon i'll be real careful with that table.. [big grin]

I built my bench about ten years ago and (bless us and splash us) just put the first accidental chisel marks on it a couple of months ago.  Then my son noticed first time in the shop after I did it.  [unsure]

Congrats on the new bench!

After decades of getting by without a real bench I finally built one a few years ago. After admiring the unmarked top for a few days I deliberately gouged it with a chisel.

Hope you enjoy using yours for years to come.

John

???  Do you intentionally take a utility knife or file and put a cut or two on all your new Festool tools?  Do you take a hammer and put a small dent in your new car and scrape off some paint?

My bench is primarily for hand tool use; cutting & chopping dovetails, hand planing, sticking moldings etc. As I see it, its supposed to get gouged, chiseled, drilled, stained and occasionally bleed on. When the top becomes unlevel I plane it flat again. The original chisel marks are all but gone, new scars have taken their place.

Several years ago I knew a young fella who bought a new BMW. The first thing he did was make a small scratch on a rear quarter panel. His comment to me was "Someone's going to do it so it might as well be me."

So Charley, what's your first project with the new bench?

John

I was gonna build a heirloom toolchest a la Chris Schwarz, but i bought glued up oak boards and they're not the most stable stuff around. So that was that. I'll build some handtool jigs instead: A shooting board 90 deg.+ 45deg. , some more bench hooks..
After the festive season i'll get some 'real oak' and then i'll give the toolchest a  try..

That's right, Edward. But i'm somewhat miffed: i'm showing off the worlds nicest workbench, but the bleedin' wallpaper appears to attract most comments...😉

Those are mighty fine workshop cats, but have you scarred your preciousss yet?

Superficially, yes. For some odd reason, the cats don't jump onto the workbench but they do like to hang out on the MFT and CMS.

Black cat looks like a bit of a nutter! 😊
Fantastic bench, by the way. Incidentally, this might be a good thread to keep periodically updating with your latest projects;  I for one would be interested to see what happens in the future

Will do. Atm. i'm at work a lot, but i'm planning a bed with headboard and all. I hope to get going in 2 weeks time. Probably not much hand tool use, as i'll use Dominoes and maybe fasteners but i recon i'll use the bench as clamp at some stage..
