I have researched this topic for a few months myself, and I've started settling in one boom arms for the photography industry.  That one I linked to seems like a great price point, and it's fairly large - full extension seems to be 49."  There are others out there that are beefier and larger.  These seem like a wonderful alternative that haven't been researched much yet.

Here's one I've been looking at and just haven't  committed on it yet.  Looks like something you could make work and not all that expensive

I've been using the boom arm mounted on a CT 33 E for years now and can't imagine working without it. Since I've moved for or five times since I got the set up it's been in each location. Since I'm in my final workshop the boom arm is parked next to two MFT 1080's that are attached to each other. In this configuration the boom arm easily reaches the entire work surface. About the only changes I've made since getting the boom arm is I stopped using the outriggers. They took up too much floor space and were tripping hazards. There's never been an issue with the setup toppling over. Other changes were to add the Workstation and CT VA 20 on top of the CT 33 E.

Because of my many moves and my final workshop being a large open space with a high ceiling, there's never been an opportunity for a wall mounted or ceiling mounted arm. My workshop is set up so that everything is mobile so the space may be configured to suit each project, so having the boom arm mobile is useful.

We have an umbrella similar to this that sees little use and I am
thinking rather than give it away or haul it to the dump I could
probably repurpose that 1.9" steel tubing for something in the shop.

Maybe a boom arm of sorts.

Considering how little they sell those for, it wouldn't be a bad repurposing if you aren't using the umbrella any longer.

Ironically, we were looking at one of those today.  It didn't look like the umbrella itself tilted, which negated its usefulness to us.  If it did, it was too unintuitive to figure out, also negating its usefulness to us.  The 10x13 model, sold for 5x the price, looked significantly sturdier and more useful.

I keep watching at the landfill (we have to haul our own trash to the dump out here, no municipal pickup) for an old kids swing set to show up with some 3 inch tubing still in good shape to serve as a source of material for shop projects.
