Cabinet Door Lock Recommendations
« on: February 05, 2019, 05:47 PM »
Throughout all my years of building furniture,  I almost have never received requests for locks- only ones used before are simple cam locks in drawer fronts.  However, I have been commissioned to build a cabinet that will have two flat-slab doors mounted to the front of the cabinet that will butt up to each other, and need to install a lock to secure the contents.  I have looked online and saw full mortise, half mortise, non-mortise locks available, but have no idea from the descriptions as to which one is best for my application.  Would welcome any advice.

A little detail:  cabinet is made from solid cherry- doors are solid cherry slabs that will be mounted to the front edge of the cabinet with decorative box hinges.  Doors are approximately 7/8" thick.

Thanks!
Gerald

We have a mahogany bar cabinet with a liquor cabinet requiring a locking door -

One door has a simple spring latch like this - https://www.rockler.com/solid-brass-elbow-catch

The other had a lock similar to this - https://www.rockler.com/1-3-4-long-cylinder-lock-choose-finish-and-keying-method

Simple clean installation.  You can go with a mortised lock as well.  Price on these will obviously vary depending on finish and material.

Depends on the tools, time and budget you want to apply.

Thanks guys for the recommendations.  Neil, I thought of your solution for my application, but don't think it will work to mount the spring latch- the floor of the cabinet needs to be free of obstructions, and the tops of the doors and cabinet raise up to a point (think of a gable roof), so the spring latch would have to be mounted too high to reach.  I could go with a cam lock in each door and have them keyed alike, but thought that was too redundant.

Appreciate the ideas!

Regards,
Gerald
