Peter, interested if you could share some of your experiences. How is the learning curve on the Phantom 3? Did you have experience of earlier drones?

Sorry for my delay in getting back to you.  The modern quadcopters take much of the skill out of the equation.  The DJI Phantom 3 is definitely in this class.  There are many functions that help you automate and then there some designed  to keep you out of trouble and get your toy home.

There is a beginner mode that places limits on altitude and distance away from you.  There are firmware controls that calculate the battery usage and force the quad to come back to you or land immediately based on the battery level.

The app has many options and I really need to spend some time in a field and not around the trees at might house that are about 100 feet tall.

Pretty cool toy / tool.

Thanks Peter. I had a look at the Microdrone, mentioned by @Clweed, and placed an order to try out before moving up to the bigger drones.

Kev, couldn't you attach a chainsaw to it and use it instead of your pole pruner?

that's hilarious.  looks like harvesting time at the qwas orchards.  those green dogs look like they got picked off the tree a bit early--still too green.  i would recommend allowing for a bit more ripening time...
