Vacuum equipment for bent lamination?
« on: April 30, 2020, 08:02 PM »
When my savings recover from the massive tax hit we just took (underpaid by a bunch last year), I plan to start on a bow-arm Morris chair and am planning to construct the arms with bent laminations.  I only have two deep-throat F clamps and since it’ll be basically a wash cost-wise between buying a whole bunch more of them and a vacuum setup, I’m leaning toward the bag/pump instead of another 12-18 clamps.  Given that, can the members here steer me toward equipment you’ve used and found suitable for such a project and any other resources for that particular construction method?  I’m an enthusiastic hobbyist so legit commercial equipment will most likely be more cost/bulk than I can justify unless it’s a screaming-good deal so I’m hoping to invest in something of a Goldilocks solution (not too big, not too small, etc...).

@Jvencius - you might find your foray into (steam) bending wood going more smoothly by picking up a copy of Lon Schleining's "WOOD BENDING made simple".TAUNTON 2010

Lots of helpful pictures of real projects and the bending fixtures he used.

Post on the FOG what you chose as the approach for your needs. Remind the rest of that everything does not need to be straight, square and parallel   [smile]

VeneerSupplies probably can help you out, and depending on your other gear you might be able to save some money.

I've not done bent laminations, but I've done a lot of veneering with clamps/cauls vs vacuum bagging.  Vacuum is far less stressful.  It takes a while to clamp up 12 clamps and messing w/ cauls/clamps while the glue is setting up is stressful.
