TSO Parallel Guide System FlipStop 2.0
« on: December 07, 2020, 11:03 AM »
I received my upgrade kits last week and applied them over the weekend. The version 2.0 includes a stop collar so if you remove the stop you don't need to recalibrate it and a spring under the tightening knob.

I thought the collar was needed on day one but this spring addition is ingenious! This spring holds the stop in place while tightening the knob saving you time and increasing the accuracy. Kudos to @TSO_Products !

@TSO_Products - a set of stop collars for the narrow stock rods would make this a total winner. Please offer these on you site.

This is good news.  I have wanted another set of stops and guide adapters but availability (and some confusion on my part) has kept me from pulling the trigger.

So, you bought the upgrade kits that turn your original flip stops into the 2.0 versions?.  If I read it right, thats $20 and a new, V2.0 flip stop is $40?  Just trying to decide which way I would want to go.  I want to leave my originals on the TPG guides and get another set, and a set of guide adapters for smaller work.  But again, availability is still up in the air, I think.

Can you describe more what exactly version 2 does? I thought v2 allows you to change between the standard rods and the longer rods for cutting narrow stop without recalibrating each time you switch. Is that correct? Your comment about the narrow stock rods "stop collars for the narrow stock rods" confused me a little.

Thanks!

I'm confused.  At the end of July this year, I ordered my TSO TPG-50 Complete Kit, which is apparently no longer available.  Aside from the stop collar, my flip stops are the same as the v2.0.  What does the original flip stop look like?

@TSO_Products , can you explain this?  Am I missing the stop collars from my flip stops?

I have been looking at the same setup, but have also held back due to the unavailability of items.

@Josh2 You are partially correct about the recalibration. The upgrade only includes one stop to my knowledge.  Therefore, assuming you put it on the standard rod, that wouldn't need recalibrating.  However, the narrow stock would need calibrating.  An extra stop would, in theory, allow you to swap both rods out without recalibration.

I set TSO an email about adding another calibration collar, but I haven't heard back.

I'm curious to those who have swapped track lengths.  Have you had to recalibrate when going from say the 30" to 50"?  I haven't tried it yet so just wondering other peoples experience.

My stops were on my TPG 30s as its the only length I really needed at the time.  I then wanted to try the 20s.  I don't know if I had to recalibrate but I did anyway because there is play when you attach the new length so I wanted to make sure I had things set up correctly.  Another reason I want several sets of stops and guide adapters but cost really adds up.  Convenience can get expensive.. OK - I'll try again. The new 2.0 (below) has the collar for the short adjustable depth stop and a counterbore in the body to accept the newly added spring (pic captured from TSO):

Upgrade kit includes the following (from TSO):

Would be nice to be able to purchase a pair of the collars for the thin stock rods because there would be no need for a second pair of stops (at least for me).

Yes on the expense of convenience.  I'm have been looking at another set of adapters and fllip guides to dedicate my 20" bars for narrow rips.  $175 + shipping/tax and I already have the T-tracks. [eek]

I have all three lengths of t-tracks (I was one of the first to purchase this system). The 50" one has a high quality Sterrett rule applied and the other two are laser etched. I was told 50" wasn't laser etched due to capability of the machine. My 20" and 30" match well but the 50" was off a bit. I worked with Hans and was able to adjust the rule on the 50" to match the other two.

Ugh (the price to pay for early adoption and great innovation) - looks like they found a way to laser etch the 50" t-track so all three tracks probably don't require flip stop adjustment. Also, noticed they now machine additional holes in the track so you can use a new connector to attach them for a longer track. They do offer a fixture to add the holes on the older style but since I have the 50" t-track probably not needed.

I can't levitate the components of my Flip Stop, so a flat exploded view will have to do.  Here is what I received in my July order.  Aside from the stop collar for the short positioning rod, what is the difference between my stop collars and the original version?  Also, I did receive the LASER engraved 50-inch rails, so I am pleased with that.

The stop collar seems to be part of the upgrade kit. Do they work on the narrow stock guide? If they do, purchasing two additional upgrade kits would give you stop collar for both the standard and narrow stop guides with easy swapping between the two. Is that correct?

A little less elegant but would it also be possible to simply use a drill bit stop collar in the correct size?

OK - I'll try again. The new 2.0 (below) has the collar for the short adjustable depth stop and a counterbore in the body to accept the newly added spring (pic captured from TSO):

You are correct - looks like you have the latest hardware except for the stop collar.

The original flip stops did not have that spring or counterbore in the block to accept the spring.

Yeah, but you would be paying $40 plus shipping for two stop collars. I'm sure since more than one of us would like additional stop collars TSO will more than likely offer them.

Don't think TSO is a big company but they produce high quality, unique, and useful tools. I started this post to report on my positive experience with the improvements to the flipstops.

One more improvement I thought would be if they offered two more stop collars for the narrow stock rods. I'm sure they will but I see I can tide myself over for $3 at Amazon for some not so good looking aluminum collars. Maybe you have a similar source?

- TSO hears you -

We will prepare a new SKU on our website
61-377 Clamping Collar, Calibration Memory, pair $ 9.95 net

We will announce the availability when it is available to order on our website. We do have stock to supply all foreseeable demand at this discounted price.

This unique assembly includes a custom Socket Head Cap Screw with a 2.5mm thread but a non-standard Socket Head to fit your regular 3mm Hex Driver so one tool now fits all principal user adjustments including the TPG Adapters.

The Upgrade Kit also includes a replacement Screw for the securing the calibrations rods in the FlipStop arm using the same Hex Driver and replacing the former 2.5mm Hex L-wrench requirement.

Look for a separate response on the StarKnob question for those Makita users who would prefer that optional accessory for the TPG ADAPTER.

I hope someone can help me with calibrating my parallel guide system.  The minimum calibration would be the stock directly against the aluminum stop.  That yields a cut that is about 1/8" larger than indicated.

I probably have something installed incorrectly, but I have been staring at the stops for a couple of hours and nothing seems out of place.  There is only one way to mount the arms onto the rail square and there seems to be just one way to install the stops onto the arms.

I have attached some photos.  If someone could point out where I have made a mistake it would be greatly appreciated.

Your plunger in your 2nd picture is installed backwards. Flip it around. That is what your material butts up to, and what you calibrate to.

Actually, I think you have the flip stop for the other hand rail installed.

@08G8V8 Thanks for the video. For some reason I'm not subscribed to Dave anymore and I missed out on quite a few videos. A worn splinter guard is probably the reason some of my long rips were ever so slightly off on full sheets. I just upgraded to the 2.0 flipstops and need to calibrate anyway, how timely.

Did you follow the TSO video by setting the flag stop to 10”, then use a combination square set at 10” against the rail cut edge, and the adjust the plunger to hit the square to lock in the calibration at 10”?

The calibration attempt was originally made at 10 inches.  However, when I went to photograph it, the unsupported parallel arms were unstable and would fall off the board before I could take the photographs.  If I had someone with me to hold it down I would have stuck with the 10" setup.

The results were identical for both settings.  It was 1/4" off in both cases.

In any case, the instructions suggested "an easy to use dimension such as 10".  The 20" dimension was easier to use for photographing and would not affect the results.

I didn’t look close enough at your new pics, but back in post #21 I mentioned your flip stop was backward and bugsy just replied with the same.

The star knob for the flip stop should be at the backside, away from the cut edge. And the stop collar should be between the head of the plunger and the flip stop body.

I'm certain it will work out for you once you make the changes.  BTW, the stop collar allows you to loosen the main screw, remove the plunger/collar assembly, setup the narrow rip bars, and when you re-insert the plunger/collar assembly, there's no need to re-calibrate as that stop collar gets pushed up against the flip stop arm and is relocated as it was previously.  Once you've calibrated these properly, they're a wonderful piece of engineering.

OK.  Problem solved, though I don't really understand how it worked.

Per the advice I received here I simply switched the flipstops.  The one on the right parallel arm went to the left parallel arm and vice versa.

Problem solved.  Many thanks.

What was particularly unusual about this entire situation was that Hans, from  TSO emailed me after seeing my post here.  Apparently, they monitor this site to route out issues.

I've had issues with products in the past, but this is the very first time that a manufacturer reached out to me to solve a problem rather than me reaching out to the manufacturer.

He offered me guidance once I got home after work and was in my shop.  He said he would call me at home on my cellphone just after he got out of his meeting.  He called at 7:00 p.m. EST.  The man puts in long hours.

Before his call arrived I had already made the switch and the problem was solved.

We had a nice discussion.  He is looking at ways to eliminate this issue going forward.  Remarkably (from my experience with other manufacturers) he really listened to what I had to say.

Of all the efforts by manufacturers to resolve problems that I have experienced, TSO's effort has been the most comprehensive.

In my opinion, the customer service on this issue has been extraordinary.

Also, the assistance I received from fellow FOG members has also been extraordinary.

Many Thanks,

In my opinion, the customer service on this issue has been extraordinary.

Also, the assistance I received from fellow FOG members has also been extraordinary.

Many Thanks,

Agree 100% on these technical issues they are top notch.

I haven't put mine on reverse (yet) but always have to think which one is right or left. Maybe simple solution is for the user to somehow mark the flip-stop as being right or left like the tracks are.

I glad you got the issue sorted out! :)

Thanks for sharing your experience here with regards to TSO customer service.  I think many of us here have either seen or had similar personal experience with TSO but it’s always great to make it publicly known when somebody goes above and beyond to ensure your happiness and satisfaction.

I look forward to seeing how TSO continues to improve and innovate in this market and am happy to support a company which not only creates an amazing product but takes customer service to a whole other level.

Is there any issue on leaving the stops on the rails.?  That was what I intended to do.

Some of us have three sized tracks - so 6 tracks total.

As far as Left/Right is concerned, just make sure you have the bolt where the flip stop pivots and/or metal rule alignment indicator facing the guide rail.

I meant that I would leave the rails mounted on the squaring arms.  I have multiple tracks too.  But I did not get various lengths of parallel guides.

Hans mentioned that they might be able to make flip stops that would work identically on either rail.

In the meantime, I intend to go the "red nail polish" route.  I will put a small dab of red nail polish on the right (for red) flip stop and a similar red dot on the right side rail.

In future setups I will only have to match the red dots to get it oriented correctly.

No need to take them off the rail unless you need to use the stop on another rail. I have 4 stops, 1 on each of my 20 and 30 inch rails. I take them off the 30 to use on the 50 when needed. I will order another set eventually just to keep 1 stop per rail and they will always be attached and calibrated.

I lost one of the springs for one of my flipstop 2.0s. Does anybody know of a reasonable alternative?

The replacement springs are very inexpensive, but I can't force myself to place a 0.20$ order and then pay 10$ in shipping right now...

There is an easy solution for that.   Buy something else from TSO at the same time, they have lots of good stuff :-)
