Tool for replicating shape, like a key tool but for wood?

Anyone ever seen one? Heard of such a thing? Basically a profile replicator?

Pattern lathe.

A lathe duplicator can be added to a regular lathe.

Sounds like a 3D pantograph with a router on the business end.

I think the contraption is called a follower (I am pretty sure that’s what turners use).

A "pantograph" is the general term for the replicating equipment. It was originally designed for artists several hundred years ago.

There are pantographs for various tools.  The one I am most familiar with is for a router:
