OT: Sheet metal Nibbler...
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:34 AM »
Not a Festool question by any stretch of the imagination, but perhaps someone here has some information for me on this topic.

Way back, I inherited an electric B&D Commercial (back when they were GOOD) sheet metal nibbler. It worked great. It had a rectangular punch & die that removed about a 3/8" wide RECTANGULAR chip. The die finally broke and I couldn't find a replacement, so it got tossed somewhere along the way.

Since then, I've had a few pneumatic nibblers that work fine, but they have a CIRCULAR punch & die and produce these little 1/4" SHARP quarter-moon chips that embed themselves in EVERYTHING...like shoe soles. Invariably, they get into the house and rugs....THEN get discovered by bare feet! Not a pleasent experience!

I don't do a whole lot sheet metal work, but when I do I really, REALLY, don't use the nibbler unless ABSOLUTELY necessary because of the situation described above (not to mention, the chips also get embedded into my MFT surface). What I am looking for is a nibbler that does NOT produce round chips, but rather rectangular chips like my old B&D.

Anyone know of a model that fits the bill (electric or pneumatic)? I already have a PC shear cutter, but that's doesn't work for small inside cuts. TIA!

Hi Pete
The old B&D nibblers were great...alas..no more :'(

I've been using nibblers made by the Modern Manufacturing Company, Willow Grove, PA with great sucess. My crew REALLY know how to abuse a nibbler...and these stand up. Punches square chips.

Im new here, so not sure if I can post links or contact info here....but send me a PM.

Modern Manufacturing Company Inc. direct number is 1-800-462-2537
I cant seem to find a website for them...

I usually buy from McMaster.com

http://www.mcmaster.com/ctlg/DisplCtlgPage.aspx?ReqTyp=CATALOG&CtlgPgNbr=2271&term=Electric%

Or mscdirect.com

http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=2262416&PMT4NO=0

Im not affiliated with either, just an end user. The tool is made in USA....and not cheap.
I have 2 nibblers & 2 gobblers, have not broken one to date. Replacement punches & dies readily available, as well as special ones for stainless & aluminum.
Just be sure to use the nibble oil  ;D
