Fell off wagon.
« on: October 17, 2015, 01:29 PM »
I have fallen off the wagon.  I had kicked the accumulation just to accumulate habit for almost a year.

I am a sucker for a Bentel though.

Back Story:  It came from the North Portland Lumber Yard (probably an hour from Hamilton, OH where the saw was made) originally, the guy I got it from bought it from the guy that got it from the lumber yard.  Neither owner after the lumberyard has done anything to the saw, it seems to be fairly original an intact. Modernized for electric drive replacement side table seem to be the only things changed.  It may very well be the original paint as well, as far as I can tell anyway.

I originally wanted it to set out front to use as advertising of my new shop space I am leasing, but it is just too nice for that.  I can find some other rusty hunk in a field somewhere in northern Indiana.

The saw ran surprising well even with one tire missing and one almost missing.

I guess 1880's or 90's.  Maybe.

That is very nice. Assuming a cast iron table in the back and a flat pulley for a belt drive?

It may have been cast iron, it may have been wood. When this saw was made wood tables were still popular and lots of machines could ve ordered with either, or combinations of them.

Darcy,
A few questions...
Who manufactured it?
What is the throat depth?
It looks like it has gold pin striping on it, would that have been an original factory color scheme?

Bentel Margedant, Hamilton OH.

36".

Yes, it is still wearing its original paint from the factory. I think the saw was made in the 1880's, possibly a little older.  No breaks, no repairs, solid old saw.  Frame cross section is triangular, some parts of the frame are over an inch thick.

When you drag something like this one that Rick and I saw at Camp 18 out in Oregon, we'll know you have a serious problem. This thing was at least 20' tall.

Still a nice score there, D.

Yeah, I was traveling earlier in the week, so not a lot of FOG time.

Wouldn't surprise me if he has two of them already though.  [tongue]

She's a thing of beauty Darcy...are those your new tires sitting on the bed? She looks better under the lights inside than she did outside. Really clean...

What size motor are you going to hook it up to?

It came with one new tire, that is it.

I will just run it with the 2hp motor it came with, probably keep a narrow band on it for fine work.

I still can't believe just how nice it is for being 135 years old.

I may have to re pour the bottom half of the bottom bearing.

Ya she's a sweetheart...pretty good looking for 135...and to think you were just going to let the old girl rust outside...

What width band will you install?

If you're pouring babbit, I'd be seriously interested in that thread. I've never done it but it does peak my interest level.
