I've been watching you guys brag about Versa-Vises for years. Every time I convince myself that it's okay to spend $200 on a used vise (when I already have 7 or 8), all I can find are the short jawed versions. I want one of the duckbill ones. Someday when my resistance is weak one will pop up. You would think that within 40 miles of where they were made, it wouldn't be that hard to come up with one.

Hey Richard...is Jeff referring to us?  Braggarts...really?

Ya, guilty as charged Jeff. And I know we made a difference because you're now scouring eBay endlessly for a Will-Burt vise.  [poke]

FWIW...the 1901 model has the manufacturer as Will Burt while later versions use Will-Burt, a small difference but it could be important in determining the manufacturing date.

Jeff, I'd have thought you'd have your pick of Will-Burts considering you're firmly within the manufacturing zone.

Another interesting note to confirm that the Will-Burt collectors on the FOG are not the only kooks in the world, I ran across someone producing vinyl manufacturing labels for the Will-Burt vises on eBay and they'd already sold almost 90 of the items. That's a lot of vinyl labels sold considering every Will-Burt already comes with a metal manufacturing label riveted to the body.

This could become a movement.  [eek]

Perhaps he's waiting for my wife's future estate-sale-of-a-tool-collector....  [big grin]

Just ran across this new vise from Fein, while not inexpensive it could be incredibly handy in a multitude of situations. Fein claims a 1750 lbf capability.

There an old Will Burt on eBay now:

(Attachment Link)

Needs some TLC but it's worth the effort. This is a very early one, looks a little older than mine.

I really needed to see this..... [cool] [embarassed]  I didn't know I needed one until a few minutes ago......

Oh, I was headed to eBay to drink the Kool-Aid. Just too late. I'm not sure about the one luvmytoolz linked. Don't think I'm looking for that much of a project...particularly at that price. Too bad. It's in my backyard.

Yeah, I did, but he's not going to like it. It was fair, but I don't think he will think so.

Doesn't appear damaged aside from the rust and overall terrible photos. A day in a pail of Evaporust would work miracles.

My [2cents] is ~$200 is fair value for the duckbill so long as it isn't damaged badly.

There's a Columbian listed for $145 that's in decent condition. @jeffinsgf

My contribution to the FOG world of weird vises.  Wilton 4" 121118, roll over and play dead, tilting vise.  $30 at an estate sale last weekend.

If I remember correctly, Columbian became a licensed manufacturer fairly late in the game, but they did produce a quality vise.

I never quite understood why there are usually grinder marks and small chunks taken out on the sides of the vise jaws.  Here's mine with a before & after shot.

Here's a nice shot of the transition of the vise from the original Will-Burt duck bill to the current short jaw Shop Fox design.

Absolute beauties Matt. Wouldn't survive the weekend in my shop...

I don't intentionally abuse tools, they just tend to be "rode hard and put away wet". Just can't have nice stuff.

Did you do that by hand or did you mill it? Like your custom jaws, too.

Jeff, both vises are marquetry but I can't claim credit. A friend of mine made both of them and did the marquetry for me as gifts.

@jeffinsgf If you are seriously interested take a look at Facebook Marketplace. There are usually a few listed. Here's a search from today in your general area.

By hand...like this.  [smile]

Those jaws are BB ply with a couple of magnets and lined with cork-leather from In-Kleind.

That blue Will-Burt Ron referenced for $50 seems like a great deal. I paid $150 plus shipping from California for mine 4 years ago.

Thanks, Ron. I check frequently, but the slightly different search center gave me some I haven't seen, including a couple of the elusive duck bills.

The base is 1-1/2" round, I used solid round stock available from Amazon and center drilled it for a 3/8" tapped hole. DOM tube would also work.

Do you have access to welding gear?

No access to welding gear.    I was thinking of bolting the base that comes with it to a piece off wood that has another piece T'ed into it, and then securing that in my TwinTurboVice:

Since we are sharing vice pictures :-)

Bob...Welcome to this counter-culture vise thing...this is what I produced for my Will-Burt vise.

On the top is a mount for 20 mm holes used in a MFT, on the bottom is a mount for 80/20 extrusions.

The Zyliss is a really interesting vise. I have one I use in my office/workroom mostly because there's no room in the shop. This one looks to be a re -branded original with some additional attachments you don't usually see.

It's not a vise to be hammered on or used for bending stuff but it is really stout and grips material tightly. Mine is modified to replace the handle with a 1/4" socket drive and I welded up an old ratchet for the handle.
