Carveco Maker +
« on: November 04, 2020, 07:03 PM »
I wonder if anyone runs Carveco Maker + on a Mac via Parallels, Bootcamp, or even better, Codeweaver’s Crossover on either a Mac or Linux machine? If so, how do you like it?

As we’re at the beginning of our woodworking journey, and my wife recently informed me that her Christmas present this year will be a CNC router!

I think we’ve settled on the Onefinity Woodworker, which picks up the gcode and runs. (Looked at XCarve, then Shapeoko XXL, then Onefinity…we have eliminated from consideration anything that requires use of ‘the cloud’ or Software As a Service as its only option.)  She wants to do big signs, fancy cabinet doors, etc.

...So trying to get up to speed, I understand the CAD software feeds the CAM, which then feeds the Onefinity gcode.

My problem is, I look at the debacle that Windows had this year with their Win10 updates, (and MS’ tendency to bloatware in general), and I’m not enthused to get another Win10 machine.

(If you are a Windows fan, please don’t take offense…I also think Apple’s planned [ahem, forced] obsolescence obnoxiousness is getting ridiculous. For example, I currently have a perfectly fine 2015 5k iMac that as far as I can tell has been essentially bricked by the 10.15.7 security update.)

In any case, thanks in advance for your experience.

I run Carveco Maker on a 16GB 2017 i7 Macbook  Pro under Parallelis 16 with no issues.  I used it tonight with my MillRight MegaV to make a small MFT top with no issues.  Good choice on the Onefinity, so far the reports of problems have been low and customer support has been responsive.  I can't say the same for my Mega V.

The incremental updates can be problematic. You should try the Combo Updater (can be found on the Apple-site); it’s a saver option.
BTW My late 2015 5K iMac is purring right along on Big Sur, seems to be one of the better macOS versions (contrary to Catalina, which is one of the worst IMO).
