alternative stands for kapex
« on: November 24, 2014, 10:16 PM »
I have finally reached the end of my tether with the ug-cart extensions, they simply are not fit for purpose in my opinion, they are so wobbly, the slightest brush loosens the whole set-up on matter how tight they are screwed(how this design ever reached the production stage defies belief!),anyhow I need an alternative and am considering the dewalt  DE7023 stand, has any one fixed a kapex to this stand or is there some other stable stand for site work?(I am in the U.K. so the fastcap stand is not available here).

Well I think a couple guys have them mounted on the smaller dewalt stand - and there's this one, which is the US version of the stand:

I'm reviving a dead thread to show the modifications I have done to my DW 723 stand.

I just bought the stand this week, and still have to finalize the attachment of the rail to the stand.  I had an extra 1400 rail sitting around, and bought $50 worth of extrusion from Rockler.  They have a sale on L brackets ($0.99/pair) which I used to attach the extrusion to the rail and the t-slot in my crown extension.

Super ghetto compared to Forrest's setup with the Kapex extensions ( want pics!), but the price was right.  Now I need to modify the production stop and add a tape.

Anyone else have some tricked out mods to show off?

Have you considered the bosch gravity rise stand?  It's a great stand but is a bit big.  The extensions are nice and I have been very happy with it's performance (I have an axial glide on it)

I do know a few guys with the kapex, bosch gravity rise, and fastcap extension and they claim it's the best set up going.

I have the same dewalt stand listed below but can't see how my Kapex can mount to it.

Do you have to modify the brackets to fit ?

I use a combination of sawhelper wings (not available anymore on earth) and self made wings. 9 times out of ten I prefer the homemade stand. You can do a lot with some 1x and decent plywood. Plus you can customize it for your needs and to fit in your transport, which is a big deal if you have to be mobile. I got rid of my bosch gravity stand because the thing was just too big.

I also have my kapex on the dewalt stand. The photo is a little old, I have made some minor changes. I no longer have the kapex bolted to the plywood then bolted to the dewalt brackets. I used flat stock steel instead. I used the steel to move the saw 3" forward on the brackets because I found the kapex was leaning back due to the weight of the saw was off centred. Also, I cut the length of the stand down 8" when I racked my van so it would fit nicely around the wheel well under the cabinets I built.

In conclusion, this stand is great and I highly recommend it

Harvey! How did you mount the fs rail to the crown stop? I really love this idea because of weight and storage space in my van compared to my big plywood wings

thanks for the replies  guys,i am happy with the ug cart but its the lack of stability of the  wing extensions that has driven me nuts, the one leg and lack of a rock solid connection at the saw means that virtually any lateral movement of the wings loosens the whole set-up,i will try the dewalt stand and either use its supports or perhaps try to figure out a method of securing the festool wings to the dewalt, thanks for your help, Adrian

Don't laugh buuuuuut........
I got an email a couple of weeks ago that HD was offering the Ryobi miter saw stand with wings and stops in GREEN for $59! It is now $99 but the reviews for the stand were awesome. I bought it, free shipping. Very stable, great reviews. Anyways the detachable arms are too small for the Kapex screw holes. I just cut a sheet of rough plywood and have an awesome set up in my tiny little basement shop that is incredibly stable.

skinee, like you I'm reasonably happy with the cart but not so much with the stability of the wings. Yesterday I ordered a pair of the Fastcap 3rd Hand adjustable stands, and a pair of the tripod bases that fit the stands - I borrowed this idea from Fastcap's own saw stand.
Attaching the stands to the wings should be straight forward - will let you know how it goes, and if it makes a difference.
