Advice for Incra Router Fence Table Combo (The Works)
« on: October 13, 2020, 06:46 PM »
Hey all, new here (but been lurking awhile).  Wife and I are going to build some furniture, our own custom closets, a built-in entertainment center, and cabinets.

We've been putting off 'the buy' on the tools we don't already have, but now it's time.  For the router table I've settled on the Incra LS-25 table combo and my question is:  if you were in my shoes, would you go metric or imperial for the fence and lift?

We live NE Florida (so imperial lumber/plywood), but like metric better.  We don't plan on dedicating a lot of room (ideally only one bay of our "3"-car garage...3 in quotes because putting 3 cars in there guarantees door dings for lack of room).

Anyways, thanks for your time.

I prefer metric mainly because of 32mm hardware :P  That said, I've built in imperial just fine even using metric hardware so it comes down to personal preference.  Setup blocks on a router seem more useful to me than any measurement. That said...

If you're making box joints or dovetail drawers, then one thing to keep in mind is that the Incra templates (from their master reference guide) have listed compatible router bits.  The imperial track is obviously tailored to using US customary bits.  If you wanted the metric LS and want to follow its template, you'll probably have to also shell out for the Whiteside 1/2" shank metric bits set to match the templates.

@Festdewalkita

I do know you can convert the LS fence from imperial to metric with a special kit for $79 should you change your mind (or want both).
Here's a link if you don't already know about this https://www.incrementaltools.com/category_s/255.htm

On the side, I found Mark at Incra to be very helpful when I purchased my TS/LS combo.  He knew these systems like a champ and could likely opine the best on the pros and cons of choosing metric over imperial with the LS system and components. If I'm not mistaken, Mark was the tall guy in the videos INCRA posted online demoing their products.  An excellent communicator.

Should you want to go this route, Mark's contact info is below (as of 2019 when we last spoke)

Wow, thanks.  Excellent insights.

R23, I'll check out those specifics.  Getting both might be the best way forward.
