Title: "New" Felder Jointer/Planer
Post by: Aegwyn11 on November 02, 2009, 09:58 AM: Whelp, I was going to get a new Hammer A3-31, but an opportunity arose that I couldn't pass up. No dust collection right now so no way am I turning this beast on, but we're sure excited!!

BTW, getting a 1000 lb machine from the driveway to the backdoor of my basement was fun. Lots of fun. [unsure]

You must have the patience of a saint. Dust collection or no I would be doing the pee-pee dance (as my Grandkids call it) in anticipation of using this beauty.

I recently had 380 lb. to get into my basement, which is about 7 feet below ground level. I let gravity do most of the work for me.

You can produce three phase out of single phase using a three phase induction motor. Contact me if you are interested.

Thanks, Charles, but I'm even more ashamed to admit that my shop actually has 3 phase. I just haven't gotten any of my 3 phase machines hooked up to it yet. (http://www.talkfestool.com/vb/images/smilies/redface.gif)

John,

Do you ever do any work in your shop or do you just buy super fantastic tools ( [drooling]) and look at them all day?

The only work I've been doing for a while is getting things set up. I'm just REALLY slow at it. [embarassed]

I can only put approx 10 to 12 lengths of timber through the thicknesser before i have to wind down the table & apply another coating of a special lubricant.

I've read about this on the other FOG (Felder Owner's Group)...there are a couple of possible reasons according to what I've read (outside using sticky wood). Probably the most common thing I've read is that you might be taking too shallow of a cut. Try letting the machine eat a little more of the wood. The other 'solution' I've read was to do some light sanding to the table with a random orbit sander and some 400+ grit paper, then wax the tables.

I finally gave in and ran some small boards through it...sans DC. Once I resurfaced from the pool of shavings QUICKLY created, I saw that the finish was pretty superb...I think there is room for improvement through doing some calibration, but overall I'm very happy with the operation!

Post by: richard.selwyn on November 23, 2009, 03:39 PM: Yes wood often sticks going through mine (Felder CF731 combo - so smaller planer than the 741) Felder's own brand "super gleit" works well - the tech from Austria who set mine up sloshed it every where - I spray it on and then wipe it off. I effetively clean the table with it and don't have too much trouble. The feed roller can get "gunged up" with resin if you are machine pine and that can be a problem too.

I can fill a 120 litre sack in no time and can't imagine using it without DC.

The other FOg has been just as invaluable as this one.

Isn't there a rule that anyone who owns a new Felder (or any tool) for more than a year without using it has to give it away?

I have the 531 Felder & it was sticking from new. After several calls to tech support & adjusting rollers etc it was no better. I too used the "super gleit" but it only lasted a short time. I eventually threw the toys out the pram & called the M.D & told him to put my money back into my account & come & collect his planer. That got his attention ! Within the week, i had an engineer come the whole length of the country to fix it. At this stage i did not know that it was a problem with the surface of the table & thought it was a roller alignment problem. When he checked the heights he told me they were spot on. Then, without even trying a piece of timber through the planer, he flooded the table with the super gleit (this tells me he new what the problem was all along). Of course, the wood went through no problem. He did this a few times, lubricate then 3 or 4 piece's of timber through no problem. I was gobsmacked & couldn't believe it wasn't sticking. It was only about an hour after he left that the penny dropped that the only reason it worked was because of the super gleit.
They did send me up a tin of a type of wax with graphite in it. It does last slightly longer than the super gleit, but not much.

I did toy with the idea of taking my sander & smoothing the table a bit, but Felder maintain that there needs to be a certain amount of machine marks for it to work properly. All i know is if i am dressing a lot of timber, it is really frustrating to have to stop every 10 Min's max to lubricate the table again.
