I think this makes sense, as the Viking is quite tall to be a “bench top” drill press. I own the Viking and bought a stand for it initially which was 35” tall, and have since changed it to something about 29 or 30” tall.

Yes, it’s missing features of the Voyager, but it is a good bit cheaper than it too. Depends on what you want/need I guess.

I bought a Nova Viking back in November with a good discount, still waiting for it. Initially they promised 3/8 ship date, now it has moved to the end of April. I'll be lucky if I get it at all before summer!

I ordered a Voyager beginning of January and they cancelled my order since they don’t expect deliveries until late August.

Woodcraft will probably locate one for you.
I know my local WC has the benchtop version on the floor.

My order is still pending, I just called them last week and they told me it should arrive at the end of April. We'll see. Viking is no longer available for purchase at that website.

Yes - had 15% off too.

Might add I checked the delivery every week by phone for 2-1/2 months and when it got down to 15 days all of the sudden the web page said out of stock. A call confirmed this and shortly thereafter they cancelled my order. They said they will honor the price when available but still very disappointed.

Just found that video and thought it would give some ideas for those who want to make their own drill press fence.

I talked to them this week.
They said they are going to continue to offer the Vulcan MT3 Spindle Assembly (#838110), Table(838?), and the downfeed accessory(#83820) as upgrade items for the Voyager.
roughly $1000 upgrade.

Well, that didn't last because when I asked only a couple weeks later I was told not available any longer.

It's not a bad price, but since you would have no warranty and there is a bit more to this tool than a purely mechanical drill press that could be a problem down the road.

If there was any remaining warranty and that could be transferred then maybe it would be a different story. However that is unlikely so I would offer something like $1200. And I say that as someone who has one and used it for about 6 months now so I know what it is, and isn't.

I had a NOVA DVR Lathe for over 10 years. It never gave me one lick of trouble and performed flawlessly. When I sold it last Fall the new owner was tickled pink when he tested it out. The drill press is basically the same motor in principle but with a more sophisticated controller tailored to drilling operations.

Parts seem to be hard to come by these days, so a control board that crapped out might put you out of business for a while. Meanwhile a 'regular' drill press will be humming along without a care in the world. There are a number of plusses to the Voyager, but possibly some cons that make it not such a good buy from a reliability perspective. I sold two of my other drill presses when I bought the NOVA, but hung on to one floor model and one benchtop model. So I have two that I could fall back on if something happened to the Voyager.

Be sure to put a surge protector on the power supply. It's in the manual. I bought a Trip Lite ULTRABLOK 428.

Thanks for the link but the manual says 3900J and this one is 1420J. I know nothing about these so is 1420J adequate?

Found a cheaper one with 4200J rating: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GFRKSXD/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_7?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

This is the one I bought for my Nova Viking.  Works fine but I keep unplugged most of the time as an added layer of protection against voltage spikes.  We tend to get brown outs when it is windy and I don't use the drill press daily.

Strange, the PDF copy of the manual I downloaded from Nova when I bought my Voyager makes no mention with regard to required or recommended minimum Joule rating of the surge protection device, only that it be rated at 15A, 120V for North America.

I searched (Ctrl-F) the manual for '3900J', 'joules', and 'surge'. The only relevant hit I got was this:

342725-0

Not doubting you but where did you find the 3900J requirement from NOVA?

I'd like to know if I need to replace my surge protector with a higher rating.

The Amazon Basics 4200J is the same one that we have on our Viking.
