Lux Cut Helical Cutter-head for Dewalt DW735
« on: November 08, 2021, 08:42 PM »
I have a DW735, and it is a great planer.  I had been using the Infinity Tools carbide blades, which are better than the stock plain steel blades.  But when I made all of my kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts from maple, I had a lot of tearout due to the grain orientation, and streaking of the planed surface.
I decided, after watching some videos, to invest in the helical cutterhead.  After looking at the Shelix and the Lux Cut, I went with the latter.  Had to wait a while to get it, but put it to use on my Sapele plant rack I just did.  That thing worked incredibly well.  Surface was perfect, and sapele is pretty hard wood.  Dust collection is much improved as the pieces are so much smaller than the shavings that come from the straight blades.  It’s expensive, but if you nick a blade, you just unscrew the damaged cutter, rotate it 90 deg and put it back.  With the Infinity blades, you had to buy a whole new set.

Does it have the same issue as the Shelix, whereby the cutterhead sacrifices 1/16 depth of cut (meaning the thinnest you can go is 3/16, rather than 1/8)?  They had to do this in order to permit installation with the blades already mounted.  They subsequently released another model that achieves the full depth of cut as the OEM cutterhead, but you have to install the inserts only after the Shelix has been mounted.

I bought the one that is the stock size so the rollers aren’t affected.  Fortunately, I had seen the issue on videos I watched before ordering.  Installing the cutter heads was a piece of cake.

Any differences between the Shelix OEM and the Lux Cut heads? I love the Shelix in my jointer, and have a DW735 that I just added a Wixey gauge to and would like to finish upgrading.
