Simple project for a friend
« on: May 01, 2021, 09:06 AM »
Recently a friend texted me a pic and asked if I could "build this" for her.
I said sure, if you get me one of the baskets to build it around.
It is a bit more elaborate than it needs to be. Since it is painted, it could simply have been made of MDF and a much more plain wood for the top.
The base is some really nice clear white pine. Not my favorite thing, but it was handy. The top however is pretty over-kill. It's a couple of very old pieces of yet un-identified hardwood that was stashed in a garage attic for decades. I left most of the old saw marks, basically just removing the planer ripples and the dirt build-up. A simple coat of walnut Danish oil and wax.
I have had guesses from Ash to Osage Orange and even Chestnut, but no one is sure. The end grain doesn't seem porous enough to be ash. The real color not yellow enough for Osage Orange. It is very dense and doesn't have a particular scent.

Thank you.
Yes, she was very happy to get it. As soon as it hit the floor in her tiny laundry room, the other 2 baskets went in. All smiles

Like it!
And even better when you have done a bespoke job. The feeling of both give and receive such makes a difference.

Fun project.

My first guess would be ash, without seeing the end grain.  The second would be one of the whiter elms - maybe Siberian elm - but I would think that the chances of just finding some of that lying around would be pretty slim.

The picture of the top does look more like Chestnut but the stain in the pores is a little confusing. That is, I’d rather see it without the stain.

I have an off-cut from the same board. I'll take a pic tomorrow.
I'll see if I can get a really close shot of the endgrain too.
