Quarter-sawn Hemlock
« on: August 15, 2023, 06:03 PM »
A few days ago, I was shown a sample from a job that we are going to complete from another company's start. My first thought was Douglas Fir. It looks very similar.
Apparently, someone missed something in the original bid, concerning the scope of the job. The original company had no intention of making the end panels of this particular installation, so now we are. What I have so far doesn't look like much yet, but the wood itself is rather unique.
As in the title, it's quarter-sawn Hemlock. I have never worked with Hemlock before. This is all veneer over MDF, large panels.
I hope I can get some installed pics, to see how it matches he rest of the job.

I was curious to see what it would look like. Definitely can see the Douglas Fir resemblance:

We used Hemlock in interior finishing, and it was sold as Hemlock fir. I am in Alberta, so I think it came from BC.

"The western hemlock (T. heterophylla), also known as hemlock fir and Prince Albert’s fir, is a timber tree often 60 metres (200 feet) tall, with a trunk 1.8 to 3 metres (6 to 10 feet) in diameter. "

I have a couple of more pics, stained and sealed. Should be finished tomorrow.
From what I gather by handling the solid wood sample, I would guess that they chose it for the weight?
That stuff is very light, way lighter than pine of the same size. This is a huge section of sound baffles for a gymnasium, and these are the finished end caps.
