MY Walnut Chest of Drawers, with G&G influence
« on: March 04, 2016, 10:51 AM »
This is my walnut chest of drawers. I started this 3 years ago but because of everyone else's project, this just sat. Im glad I finished it because its so awesome. It was my first project with a little Greene and Greene (or so I think) to it, although G&G didn't use walnut as far as I know.
Take a look at the top. Do you see the Grinch? Isn't it amazing what you see when you book match?! Now, we can't decide where to put it. Im thinking the kitchen, living room or foyer-somewhere it won't be used, but admired by all! The wife is currently saying NO!
Please give me your feedback as I like to improve and my peers are my best resources.
I hate it when people post pictures and they're sideways but I've done it here and don't know why or how to correct it. Oh well, Im a woodworker, not a computer-picture guy :)

Fantastic!  And just in time for me to ask a question about veneering.  What did you use as a substrate for the top and what was your process for applying the veneer?

Since someone hated  the contrasting handle, I will comment that I LOVE the contrasting handles, but I would of preferred a White Curly Maple.

Great piece.  Love the top and the contrasting handles.

I'll bet that if G or G had seen this, they would have started working with walnut. ;)

My only suggestion would be to try for a little more consistency on the drawer fronts.  The bottom ones match well with a straight grain with a little uplift.  The top ones are more highly figured.  Both are nice, but consistency would work better for my eyes...

A very nice piece of work - thank goodness you decided to finish it.

Here in the UK it is quite difficult getting wide walnut boards and as yours are book matched I guess you know the guy who milled the trunk?

I do not do veneer. There are drawbacks to solid wood and veneer; but I love solid wood. Even the back is shiplapped walnut and the drawer frames are solid poplar including the bottoms. Thanks!

This walnut was harvested locally. I did the resawing/bookmatching. I had no idea the 'grinch' was going to happen and honestly it takes away from my project, but it goes to show how amazing woodworking can truly be!

That looks amazing.  Really nice work.  The walnut is stunning in a chest like that.

Welcome to FOG.  Look forward to seeing more of your work -

I absolutely love G&G, for me it's the very pinnacle of furniture and design. Darrell Peart has 2 fantastic books on G&G design, with a 3rd coming out around June next year I believe. If you haven't seen his youtube channel yu should check it out, just beautiful work.

The Samurai Carpenter Jess, also made a very G&G/Art and Crafts style set of bedside tables that are really phenomenal.

Little fun fact, the G&G designed Gamble House was used as Doc's home for the Back to the Future film!
