Very nice work.  I have a couple of questions for you if I may ask. How much larger do you build the sliding doors compared to the opening size?   Is there a standard that you follow for sizing the doors width and height in comparison to the opening?

Thank you

thank you for the info.  Hopefully this yr some time I'll be doing a remodeling of a few rooms and I believe I'll be building a few sets of doors.   Have you used Rustica Hardware for any of your hardware?   They seem to have a wide range of choices.  I've not looked anywhere else, I know their products from their never ending emails.  They do seem to be quality hardware

Thanks again

Satin glass sliding door completed.  Will install tomorrow.  Used 1.5" thick Poplar for the timber and the door will sit lower at the customer's residence. Just put it on my track as a mock fitting.

Nice work!  Really like the look of barn doors!

I see the clips on the outside of the doors at the floor.  I assume you have some kind of spacer against the wall to prevent them from brushing the wall or door frame?  Are those metal with a plastic protector?  Just thinking about protecting the finish from opening and closing.

I'm also curious about these kinds of doors with kids who might open or close them too quickly and whether you've ever had them come off the track.

Thanks for sharing!

@neilc The hardware I've used (Custom Service Hardware in WI) include stops that are installed after the door is installed to limit the travel range of the door  Their website has some videos detailing the recommended installation steps.

There are "stops" on the track that you set at desired locations to stop the travel of the door so no worries with them sliding off.  The bottom of the door has "stay rollers" to prevent door from swinging out and jumping off track.

Nice. Do you remove the old door strike plate, door stop molding, infill the
hinge mortises and latch hole and then paint or is the client handling that?

Depends on the client. Some actually requested the entire door jamb removed and drywalled to remove any existence of a door jamb.   Others just paint over the hinge mortises.

Glass doors in progress...

Awesome craftsmanship.  The more I see your stuff the more I'd like to make my own.  Would you mind showing how the glass is retained in your doors?  Can it be replaced if it breaks without destroying the door?  I really like the look but I tend to worry my kids will find a way to test my creation's future serviceability if you know what I mean.  :)

Thank you for the kind words. In regards to the glass, I've installed it several ways.  For a "permanent" and much cleaner look a slot routed into the door frame with some silicone works quite well.  For a more "traditinal" look a rabbet is put on the frame with trim pieces holding the glass in place.  Glass is easily accessible in the event it needs replacement.

Tempered glass is quite strong though.  Had a door standing up against my garage (not in the best angle) and as luck would have it...fell over.  I surely expected the glass was broken...but it didn't.  Large piece of Flemish glass about 6' tall and 3' wide...not a crack.

As I've been doing commercial glass for the last 37 years, I can attest to the toughness of tempered glass.  Tempering glass is similar to tempering and hardening metal.  The glass is heated to high temps and the cooling and time is regulated.  You can wack it with a hammer and it probably with not break, but hit it with something pointed and it will shatter into aquarium gravel, pieces still sharp by not life threatening if contacted.  We used to throw salvaged door glass down a stone embankment about 30' high and usually they would make it to the bottom with shattering.  I actually use a Starrett spring loaded center/marking punch to blow up tempered we put in our dumpster.

Haha...you won't get a ticket but a business card!   [eek]

When I got  mustered out of the army, I happened to be in a neighboring town in an area I had been familiar with a couple of years previously, before my 2 years vacation paid for by my "friends and neighbors."  Things had changed in those two years.  I happened to turn onto a street I had traveled many times in the  past, only this time, it was ONE WAY in the opposite direction  I was traveling.  At the end of the street the traffic light turned red and so I stopped.  There happened to be a police officer standing at the corner.  While I was stopped, the officer strolled over to my car and asked, very casually, "Would you like to buy a couple of tickets to the Policemen's ball?"  "Yes Sir.  And how much are they?"

Thanks for sharing (so many of!) your door projects. Tons of great ideas!!

Sorry for my late reply.  I mainly use dominos now for all my door builds.  I use the monster 14x140 for the stiles/rails and 8x50 for the “back portion” of the door.  The dominos make for perfect alignment and strong joints.  And fast, without compromising build quality.  Very impressive tool.  I WILL NOT be without it for my builds!

Your imagination seems to never end. Nearly every door (How many are there now? a few hundred?;-)  I have never counted) is different. i especially like the reclaimed wood doors.  Even those go beyond the differences in wood from one piece to another, but you manage to change the patterns of assembly as well.

NAH! He's a police officer. He gets to fires first, sets up so he can grab burnt pieces of wood, toss into his cruiser, goes home and whips off a door or two with the loot.

Where you getting your reclaimed lumber?

Have a source that travels the country taking down old barns and buildings.  The wood is meticulously removed with all nails removed  and then put in a kiln for several days.   Then I transform it to whatever the customer wants.

FWIW...saw this from TruStyle today...a nice door and a different color, rather interesting.

I also like the low profile door hardware that doesn't distract from the door itself. It allows the focus to be on the door.

Yeah, I have done NUMEROUS doors with that style hardware. Most clients want a little more attention on the hardware and feel the “true barn door style” has more pronounced hangers.  To each their own. Here are just a couple of doors I have built and installed over the last two years using the top mount hardware...

I have a question;
Is it feasible to build a barn door style door that has some degree of air sealing? Such as between an unheated space and heated (or cooled) space. We have an enclosed, unheated porch and would like to replace the existing French doors between the porch and the interior of the house. Space is a premium, so the notion a door that doesn't have to swing is very attractive.

Thanks

In the recent 5 photos you've posted, I see a large 2-panel natural hickory (?) door, 3 white painted 5-panel doors, a British Brace door in knotty alder and a shaker door painted white.

Is it common in Texas to mix in that many door styles and door finishes in the same house?

BTW...I really like the white oak doors you made in Dallas, nice design.

My bud in Oregon wanted me to build him a couple for his bed room when i was there. He got some interior off the shelf doors and hung them. He said they were a bit long and he wanted them a tad shorter.
I never got around to building them. So I was curious whether there was a rule of thmb on the length. Since these were bedroom doors, I was going to make them out of Alder use some danish oil to make the grain pop and darken over time, for the inside panel I was going to put a mirror in.

Anyway thanks

Theres a lot moving to that area. they seem to really like the DFW and Austin areas. Mentioned McKinney quite a few times.
