Golf Themed Coffee Table - 18 Holes
« on: January 08, 2023, 03:52 PM »
We designed this golf themed coffee table for the Texas statewide furniture competition that just ended in December.  It was given the award for "Best Craftsmanship" by the panel of judges.  We call it "18 Holes".

18 HOLES

“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.” Arnold Palmer

This quote is perfect to describe our one-of-a-kind coffee table created for anyone who enjoys spending a little time hitting the links.  A unique piece of functional art, the original design successfully combines sleek modern styling with familiar elements from the game.

The top is Black Walnut and inspired by a golf club head.  The silhouette of a golfer is inlaid using Curly Maple.  Grooves along the top mark the fairway and lead to a recess in the green where you can display your favorite memento ball.  The ball is not attached and can be easily replaced by one special to you.

The base is composed of a chevron leg featuring 18 holes, the piece’s namesake.  It is made from Curly Maple with a Black Walnut stripe to divide the front nine from the back nine.

The opposite leg is shaped to show the arc of a ball descending on a flawless line to that elusive magical Ace.  Polished stainless steel is suggestive of a gleaming club shaft and adorns layers of Black Walnut and Curly Maple.

Underneath the top, custom-crafted steel mounting plates provide for wood movement and allow the piece to be disassembled for shipment or storage.
The steel is professionally powder coated for longevity.

All design work was done using CorelDraw and Sketchup.  All woodworking was accomplished with conventional shop tools and without the use of a CNC router or Shaper Origin.  The wood finish is a European hardwax oil that has been hand rubbed to a satin sheen.

That is very cool looking. After reading your description, it seems that it is smaller than the pictures initially indicated. The fact that it has a real golf ball gives it some scale.
Care to give some over-all dimensions?

My wife repeats that quote daily... [big grin]

Over the years, I've become such a big fan of your creations because they continue to evolve and resonate. You keep expanding and present a different perspective with each yearly offering and your attention to detail is outstanding. You're such a creative force and that interests me. You've been posting this stuff on the FOG since who knows when, but it's always fresh and always interesting.

And this is coming from a guy that is permanently tethered to "modern sensibilities", or the "less is more" movement. I have a substantial foot print in the modern/European design philosophy.
My grandfather may have been born in Texas but I'm still firmly rooted in the Bauhaus movement.

Congratulations on the award Joe...you and your brother deserve it.
