9 ft. tall Cherry cabinet and stacked adjustable shelf
« on: August 16, 2022, 12:16 AM »
Just finished up a rather long build of a piece for my office -- a bottom cabinet with a adjustable shelving unit that stacks on top, connected via DF500 connectors and screws to the cabinet top -- total height of 9 ft.  It can be disassembled for transport, then reassembled on site first connecting the top to the base of the shelving unit, then sliding it on the cabinet top using stop blocks to center it on the cabinet

I spent a fair amount of time up front sifting through the lumber pile to select choice boards, making sure I had enough of some nice pieces to get consistent grain, resawing when I had to in order to make the panels consistent.

Frame and raised panel construction on the drawers and cabinet doors, and for the shelving unit simple frame and thin panel, trimmed out with moulding.  Shelf pins done with the LR32.

Finished with Osmo satin to give it a soft glow and emphasize the quilting on the panels

Finished installing it earlier today.  I gave up on making wooden handles for it for the moment, as I had to move on to other things, so the current contemporary metal hardware is a placeholder for now.  I will probably add in some internal, leveled storage on some of the drawers (which are a generous 6" deep), and then some boxes on the bottom shelf for files.

Beautiful. I love Cherry for its grain patterns and colors.
You capitalized on these qualities and created an impressive piece.

@ear3 Beautiful work as always Edward.

That is gorgeous cherry, lovely and your choices for placement and grain matching really accentuate the patterns.

Now you're going to have to replace that shelf next to it with a cherry or walnut piece.  [big grin]

Seconded.

The one next to it looks so uncomfortable now. Poor fella!

Thanks for the inspiration, the "suspended" reinforcer you used on the shelving is giving me ideas ...

Fantastic work, looks absolutely brilliant! Grain is amazing!

As an avid book lover I also like the antiquarian looking books in it! ;-)

Edward, your projects just keep getting better.  I am seriously impressed by your choice of wood and grain-matching.  Well done!   [smile]

Exactly!

“resawing when I had to in order to make the panels consistent”

This is the extra step that makes the difference. Too many people give preference to preserving the width of the stock to the detriment of the appearance.

Nice job Edward...the grain's the thing.  [smile]. I also really like the arch detail on the base along with the arch detail on the upper unit.

Just curious, how many hours do you have in it?

@Cheese  I lost count -- but checking my process photos, looks like I started the build first week of July.

@rvieceli Yeah, that pine shelf looks kind of homely now.  I'm not getting reimbursed for materials either, so it will be a while until an upgrade.  Maybe some stools around the conference table in the interim though...

@ear3

Edward, As usual, Outstanding Work!  Like others, I love the grain on the panels.  The two base sides are special.

Thank you so much for sharing your builds and all the photos.
