Built in Cabinets
« on: October 06, 2019, 05:21 PM »
This summer, my project was to make some built-in cabinets to be installed in an old closet.  This is in my master bedroom.  I'm also in the process of building some other built-in cabinets around the bed.  It is about 2/3 done.  It will get finished next summer.  (The weather is turning and I have to do all of my woodworking outside on my driveway.  I probably can't get the cabinet and doors done before it is too cold to paint).

But this was a large undertaking.  It had to be a tight fit.  I had an electric fireplace insert I had to build into it.  The boss wanted a really big drawer to store sheets and stuff in as well.

They are constructed of cabinet grade plywood from the box stores.  Doors are simple flat panel doors.  Panels are 1/2" ply.  Rails and styles are made from poplar.  These were primed with zinser BIN shellac based primer and General finishes milk paint.

The top of the center cabinet is solid walnut.

It was finished using General Finishes enduro sanding sealer (2 coats). And then I applied two coats of General finishes High performance top coat.

Start to finish, this took about 8 weeks working mostly a few hours on Saturdays and Sundays with a few interruptions in between.

It was (as are all of my projects) a learning process.
