stuck drawer - UPDATE!!
« on: March 27, 2023, 09:44 AM »
my brother in law has a stuck kitchen drawer because of a knife that somehow is jammed and it has prevented it from opening.  Short of getting a crowbar to force the drawer front off, is there any trick to getting the drawer loose? it's the drawer just under the counter.

Has he tried to "Fonzie" either the drawer face or the countertop to see if it shakes loose?

What is to "Fonzie" something? I get the Happy Days reference but not sure what it means...

I had this happen a few years ago. I was able to remove the 2 drawers under the jammed drawer and reach in to remove the stuck object from the back. Sometimes, you can get the drawer open just enough to slide in something thin and push the stuck object. Other that the above, a good hard jiggle might work.

I think he is referring to the "well placed fist bump" that would make the jukebox begin working again

not yet.  I have to go over there tonight. I'll post once I get it open.  I'm going to remove the drawer underneath so I can maybe see what's going on a little better.

I'm old.....I remember that show when it was first on the air in the early 70s. '74? something like that.
Ron Howard and Cindy Williams (Shirley) had worked together the year before on American Graffiti.

King of Random strikes again. That's a name I was given many years ago and it won't go away.

If there is a drawer above the one that is stuck, remove that.  It should give access to the blockage.

Or,

Remove the drawer directly below and reach in and jiggle the stuck drawer by slapping it from underneath. Do this several times in hopes of causing the contents to “settle” and remove the blockage.  I find that with enough jiggling, this usually works and is possibly preferable to a divorce.  [eek]

This has happened to me … too many kitchen tools jammed into a drawer.  If it will open a hair, you could try using fish tape or a wire coat hangar to dislodge the offending item.

They were the “it” couple in American Graffiti—Steve and Laurie.

Harrison Ford was the driver of the ‘55 210 (Chevy).

Susan Summers was the driver of the T-Bird.

Mackenzie Phillips was the young girl in Milners ‘32 coupe.

Richard Dreyfus was the one who made the mistake of sitting on the Pharos car.

Launched many careers.

Only movie I own, seen it at least 50 times.

Great sound track also.

Here's the update.  I went over to my BIL's house last night.  It was only a single drawer under the counter and a cabinet door underneath.  Stuck my head under the drawer found a broken stub of a Japanese knife sticking out through the bottom of the drawer which was made out of .25" pressboard.  Somehow, the knife, which is typically stored in a wooden knife slotted holder, was pushed down blade first which lifted the handle up and then it got caught.  So over the last couple of years, each time they tried to open the drawer it ended up driving the blade down until it eventually pierced the drawer bottom.  As some point, they managed to break off the blade that was sticking out underneath the drawer.  Not sure how they managed to do that.  Anyway, about a centimeter of the blade was left through the bottom so I got a cold chisel and a ball peen hammer and turned the chisel at an oblique angle so I could try to hammer the blade remnant back up through the drawer bottom. After a few minutes, I finally was able to drive it through enough so it wasn't caught anymore then handle dropped back. Viola!  The drawer was able to be opened and I handed him what was left of the knife.  They were so happy you would've thought I gave them money.  Always feels good to come up with a solution to help someone.
