@mattbyington the piece looks amazing.  I'm actually building the woodwhisperer grandfather clock out of cherry.  What finish did you just apply?

Thanks,
Rich

That's a great looking cabinet.  I like the design a lot.

You've received a ton of great advise here especially about wood movement and grain orientation.  In general you rarely see modern designs like this made of solid wood without a frame and panel construction, especially the back panel and doors.  I worry the doors will eventually cup and not close correctly with such a large panel unsupported by a frame or battens.

With such a well setup shop I wouldn't hesitate using plywood for such builds with solid wood edging.  The case, doors, and back panel would be great choices for plywood panels.

Also one last comment, I wouldn't hesitate in making your shelves thinner.  They might be just a bit chunky for the design and you'd be surprised how strong wood really is.  You can get away with much thinner shelf stock than what you typically see people doing.  Mike Pekovich is a big advocate for making parts much thinner than you think you can get away with which really adds to the overall aesthetic of a piece.

And good god, leave a little dust behind once in a while!!! That Tesla I'm sure would like to know that someone is actually doing some woodworking in that shop.

@RKA thank you so very much!!

@FestitaMakool yes I love cherry too! Such a classic!

@Rich Kline thank you so very much! That is awesome! I applied General Finishes Arm-r-seal in Semi-gloss!

@AnthonyE thanks so much! I totally understand the concerns and agree with them. The doors cupping is one worry of mine, absolutely. I didn't want the doors made out of plywood because I wanted that sexy solid walnut and cherry inlay look, but the back panel in hindsight probably should have been plywood instead of solid cherry hahahah it took 6 boards!

The shelves are definitely too thick. Agreed on that one. I lived and learned. I had already finished them when I found out. Oh well. Next time, I'll know!

Here you go team - final pictures, this one is a wrap!!

Matt

It came out really nice Matt. What a nice present to receive.  [big grin]

Also, next time you could consider some tempered glass shelves if there will be internal LED lighting. For instance, a 1/4" thick tempered glass shelf 18" x 14" will support 28 pounds.
