Should I Refinish or repaint ?
« on: January 17, 2019, 09:58 PM »
This 1960's vanity has walnut(?) face frame and some kind of 1/16 veneer plywood doors and fixed panels.  Its not great but at the time it was built it would have been kind of high end. It fits the tiny space well and is a nice example of an old school site built cabinet, im thinking refinish.  In refinishing, what would you use for the walnut? I am considering adding a walnut stain first to balance the plywood with the face frame. Its a small wet room and it is only about 2.5 feet from the shower so I want to keep that in mind. Im less inclined to use waterlox or tung oil but ive always brush/ rolled vanities or built new and used hvlp in shop.  Here are some images:

depends, If ya want to keep the walnut, Id remove the doors and drawers sand the face frame, stain and use  GFs poly finish. It can be brushed on. Then build the doors and drawers stain and finish in the shop , use Euro hinges /hardware.

You could also use a white GF poly or have the poly tinted to what ever color you want. Since you have a HVLP its not that big of a deal to spray in place.

jobsworth,  thanks for the idea about adding the euro hinge.  Seems like I could make an edge strip and that will look good and work better than the lipped hinge.  And do the same thing for the drawers.  brushing on clear matte for now to seal it and maybe help it somehow- i dropped one and the veneer separated completely from the door!  i just glued it back on until next time... will post a pic at some point soon.
