Maximum drawer width for typical drawer slides
« on: October 07, 2020, 08:12 PM »
Hi Folks,

I bought some Knape and Vogt side mount soft close drawer slides (on clearance) for a shop cabinet project I'm working on. In the installation instructions the maximum specified drawer width is 24" and I was wondering why such a maximum would be specified....I have used these slides before and like them a lot. Any input or links greatly appreciated.

Just guessing but they probably have to factor in the width at whatever the full rated load is. 75 or 100# most likely and the racking on wide drawers if they arnt pulled out evenly could separate the halves so its most likely a case of CYA more than anything.

I’ve used similar Blum slides up to 1200mm wide which is 47” and they are fine. Need careful fitting to avoid racking but the slides tend to self-straighten.

We do a lot of 47.5" wide drawers with Blum 569F series undermount slides for pots and pan drawers. Any drawer 36" and over get a synchronizing system.

The side mounts are held in place by short screws, that may be something they factor in.

These are 48" under the Wolf cooktop.

I have made many drawers over 24" up to 79" wide using side mount full extension guides. I have built wide drawers for my shop & for clients. I have not had any problem with any of them.
Racking is not a problem because all of the drawers have 1 pull in the center of the front.

In my shop I have the following drawer widths using side mount full extension slides.

1 - 79"
8 - 44"
3 - 42"
10 - 39 1/2"
4 - 35 1/2"
5 - 34"
8 - 30"
7 - 26 1/2"

I just finished up 2, 54" wide drawers to hold all of my TSO & WoodPecker rules, guides etc.  Wanted them off of the wall. So far so good.

I believe the Grass (grass.at) drawer runners have the ability to instal a synchronisation rod that stops racking, but I might be mistaken...

I think you will be fine I have some that are over 40" wide.  I installed two pull knobs instead of one long rail or pull that people might tend to grab and pull off center.  Having 2 small knobs basically requires the user to use both hands and creates a more even pull which helps prevent any racking.  Either way your not that much over so I wouldnt worry.
