Recommend a 12" 300mm METRIC Rafter Speed Square
« on: June 18, 2021, 04:44 AM »
Hi,

I am after a Metric Speed Square as per title.

However it appears none of the following brands make or sell in the UK a larger 300mm metric speed square:

Dewalt - make one but not available
Stanly - Imperial only
Swanson - only a 25cm
Milwaukee - not in UK
Johnson - Imperial only
Empire - Imperial only
Vinca - Imperial only

Ebay sell some like this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283869598579?hash=item4217f25373:g:eMYAAOSwaldesrwc

Any experience with a recommended brand of Metric square much appreciated.

Search on Amazon.com.

Swanson lists a 25cm speed square.

If you want to move up in quality, Shinwa offers a Japanese speed square too.  It is slightly different in design, but probably very workable, but smaller.  They also make a 30cm adjustable sliding square that functions as a speed square too. Pricey, but a well-respected Japanese manufacturer of metal measuring tools.

Swanson is probably one of the best bets.

You may try search for these, scroll down on this page (it’s in Norwegian)
It’s a brand called Trigjig.

AFAIK there are no 30 cm speed squares. And to be honest there may be a reason for that: try sticking that in a pouch on your belt… : )

Re the Shinwa squares: they are excellent but don't have the angles shortcuts that a regular speed square has.

I own a Hultafors sq and that is advertised as 18 cm. Works for me. But I don't do framing like you yanks do.

I have both Swanson 250mm and the Hultafors 180mm
As Bert Vanderveen, the Hultafors is the handy (enough) one, and it’s one of Hultafors’ better tools. Albeit, i think its just a re-branded square.

Shinwa are just better than most, and made for pro use - in a Japanese way of working.

This Shinwa speed square? (thing is it's not that big) I wonder how well it works with a circ saw too, especially with the thick flange.

This the 30cm sqaure you are talking about? - I don't think this would work with a circ saw as a speed square but might be a useful measuring tool.

I've found the trigjig website, made here in the uk. Pricey at north of £100 for 1 square, but I guess a good bit of kit, currently out of stock though.

I get your point, there are loads of 12" speed squares which are big. It's just the metric dimensions.
There is one - Dewalt:

DWHT25228-0
I can't see it for sale anywhere

I was going to suggest the TrigJig ones but I've been beaten to it already. I've never laid hands on one but they look and sound pretty good and the price likely reflects that I would hope.

An alternative is to use a framing square with what Americans call "stair gauges" (IDK what us Brits call them!) normally used for laying out repeatable stair and roofing cuts. Attach a pair of them to a roofing square lets you butt them up against something for square layouts but would also work for guiding a circ saw. You can also attach just one to a framing / speed square for repeated angles too. Taking measurements will require accounting for the offset created so not ideal in that regard.

Squi.Jig can be had from TF Tools in the UK for £40 a pair. Martinez have just said "hold my beer" and come out with their own even more expensive ones for $100. This assumes you can find a good metric framing square...

I was not aware of the TrigJig, but it seems like Milescraft's angle finder does much of the same.  They make inexpensive equipment, but I've asked our QC manager to check the measuring tools I bought from them and they are surprisingly accurate.

It directly transfers miter angles to the miter saw.

MIROCK Square

Not necessarily ideal for 2x4 framing, but still a tool I like the look of.
Anyone got one?

TrigJig have just released 2 new 300mm rafter squares: one with a fixed fence and spirit level and the other with a movable fence (no spirit level) each costing £130. They look pretty good to me which is a shame as I don't need one, not really...
