Lie Nielsen No 51 - shooting board?
« on: February 04, 2021, 07:43 AM »
Finally grabbed a proper shooting board plane. Managed to grab one of the few LN No 51's on the planet. Not sure I can justify it's cost but there it is. Brand new, mint and one of those tools where the cost of design and manufacture is not lost on you when you see it in the flesh.

Any recommendations of shooting board designs? Looking for something simple but robust. I know there are lots of designs out there but what are people actually using on a frequent / daily basis?

After making several so so shooting boards, I bought the Vogt ramped shooting board. Amazing with the LN 51 plane. I found the plane has to be super sharp if trimming end grain. No surprise there, right?

I met Vogt at a local woodworking show a few years ago. I was seriously impressed with his shooting board. You could tell he has spent hundreds if not thousands of hours refining the design. I'm used to spending a lot on tools, but my jaw dropped when he mentioned the price. That being said, I'll probably end up with one after I give up evaluating the alternatives.

Wow - that Vogt looks amazing. But before dropping that kind of coin, have you tried making one from Lie Nielsen's plans? Attaching for reference....

I'd be looking at the Veritas Shooting Board, or one built around their fence/chute. It is the closest to the Stanley #52 shooting board. Here is mine on a #52 ...

I wrote a review of the LN #51 here: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolReviews/LN51ShootingPlane.html

Lots to take in there, thank you all. I'll have a good read through.

I suspect I may get hold of the Veritas fence and track and keep it simple in the board setup. Thanks again.

Just curious if you got it directly from LN? I’ve been waiting for them to come back in stock.

Thanks

I picked up a new, unused plane from a well known auction site. It had never been out the box and I paid around the same cost new here in the UK so everyone came out on top in that transaction - given the current circumstances. We can't get hold of any LN's here at the moment, even the Clifton planes are non-existent to very low in their stock numbers here as well.

Looking on line I suspect it's going to be a long time before direct LN stocks catch up especially given their sustainable business operating model.

I have the Veritas shooting board. It is very nice, although a little pricey. I hate making shop equipment, too much other stuff in the house to do!

I've been happy with the LV shooting board.  Most of the shooting I do is 90 degree, and thus so far I haven't needed the full capabilities of the miter gauge, but it does come in handy when I occasionally have to do a precise skew a few degrees north or south of 90, which can be quickly dialed in on the gauge.

Don't.

It is unnecessarily fussy.
