shop projects v. end projects

I recently ordered the full size Dash-Board workbench and I'm already starting to plan how to build a rolling cabinet for it. It's going to be pretty big - almost 8' long!  It's going to have systainer drawers, other storage drawers and I'll finally have a place to keep all my MFT related accessories by where they are going to be needed as well a place to keep my spare CT22 to be used exclusively at that table. What's interesting to me is I'm more excited to build this shop project than I am to build end user stuff, ie. cutting boards, dog kennels, outdoor furniture, etc. Working ON your shop can be more fun and fulfilling than working IN your shop so to speak. If anyone has any good, longer mft rolling cart plans, I'd love to see them!

I've been in a similar phase for the past year or so, While I think it's cresting, I too tend to have more fun figuring out how to improve the shop & capabilities. Glad to know I've got company.

RE: the longer MFT, there was a fair amount of yapping about a similar setup in this thread. The cart is not as long as the Dashboard & needed to be around 700mm deep to accommodate 2-deep systainers.

FWIW, I recently de-constructed the mega MFT cart, mostly due to the size of my shop but I also found it somewhat inflexible. Granted, I'm not a big user of systainers, most of mine never see the inside of the shop.

A friend was showing someone some cabinets and work surfaces he had built for his shop. The guest asked, "What do you build in your shop?" To which, my friend answered, "Well...my shop!"

I have found that big benches are excellent for one thing and that is they are a flat surface to store stuff that has no other place in the workshop. I am a bit of a neat freak and it made me realise the best thing I could do with my long bench was to make it smaller so less junk was left on it.

My bench is huge, 50" wide and over 130" long. 96" of it is covered in dog holes, with the last section un-touched. It has a few drawers and a couple of Systainers under it, but absolutely nothing  on top. Of course, things are built there, but nothing stays. My tools are put away at the end of every day. Neat freak....guilty, but it's efficient.
Even in this commercial cabinet shop situation, I still spend some time working on/improving my space. It's rather cathartic.
