Hardwood/exotic wood in NJ

Howdy folks,

Recently moved from Boston to NJ and wanted to know if anyone can recommend any hardwood centers that carry good quality lumber. . I got spoiled by having a few lumber yards near me plus having rockler and woodcraft also. NJ seems like a ghost town for woodworkers...ugh.

Any recommendations would be appreciated, I'm near Summit NJ.

Hehe, it is.  Welcome!  There is a place called Boards and Beams in Fairfield I think.  That’s closer to you.  I haven’t been there myself, but some members here have said good things. 

Just outside Trenton there is Willard Brothers.  They specialize in slabs and North American hardwoods, but they do carry some tropical hardwoods.  I saw 8/4 purpleheart, padouk and zebrawood last time I was there.  It’s all milled though, so priced accordingly.  It’s worth a visit if you’re passing by.

The gold mine is a place I haven’t visited yet.  It’s a haul for you being an hour west of Philly.  Hearne Hardwoods in Oxford PA.  If you’re looking for tropical, rare, figured, this would be a good place.  Oh if I only had a truck!

Might have to make a trip down to Hearne once I pickup my utility trailer, will need to stop up on lumber!

There’s a place in Yardley Pa, that’s about 40 miles from you. It’s called M w Quinn hardwoods, it’s not an actual lumberyard or store, rather a guy that has a bunch of sheds FULL of hardwoods, he has some stuff I didn’t know existed. All cash and carry, no services other than selling you the rough sawn wood.

Boards and beams is well stocked for most domestic and they clearly showcase prices on the web, which is great for estimating.

I wish I was closer, Boards and Beams is about a 3 hour drive from where I am in South Jersey.

@Bob D. check out Full Circle Woodwerks around Tabernacle off 206. John mills locally sourced logs and has really nice stuff at times.

Quinn is a weird place.  There are basically no signs, and its just a small barn with some slabs and then a bunch of containers full wood out back.  I wasn't overly impressed with the wood or the prices, particularly considering the no-frills experience.   As long as you know what you want and its fine, but I wouldn't go there just to browse or to pick out a particularly choice board for a showcase piece.

Hi and welcome to the neighborhood.  I’m in Summit.  While they don’t have the exotic stuff I get most of my lumber from Dreyer’s in Chatham.  They are also where I got most of my Festools from.

I'm just west of Vineland about 25 miles from the Delaware Memorial Bridge. I know where Yardley is. I will have to check them out one day, thanks.

Lots of good jeep trails around Quaker Bridge Road, I've been steadily exploring them for the past couple years. I just wish there was someplace to camp back in there.

John knows me as "the guy in the jeep with the axes" as I often combine the trips if the slabs I need are short enough to fit in the Wrangler.
