New Classifieds Policy
« on: January 23, 2012, 03:43 PM »
Am I the only one that has a serious beef with the new rule?

It seems to be solving a problem that didn't exist, and creates numerous real problems to boot

I can understand reducing the amount of irrelevant chit-chat that may occur in forum classifieds (though that hasn't seemed to be a problem here).

After having rewritten this post numerous times, it boils down to one thing: I learn ALOT from questions/statements other members may pose the OP.
Which seems to be the point of forums in the first place

If the point is to reduce the chit-chat, make that a rule.
1) No irrelevant chat
2) No complaining about the posted price
3) MUST post a price, this isn't ebay

These are basic rules you will see in many/most forum classifieds. I have yet to see a ZERO response possible classifieds. (other than the literal classifieds lol)

Actually this was a problem. It was common to see posting that went beyond chit chat. Dog piling the seller because of price or this or that to an unexeptable degree.

The Classifieds are a simple thing -- I have X for sale. Contact me if interested.  Communication is done on a person to person basis. Questions can easily be asked or  input given to the seller by PM.   And the seller can easily  update the listing with relevent info. that may be important to prospective buyers.

To add onto what Seth wrote, complaints weren't being posted on the Forum, they were being sent to Shane, Seth, and I.  Originally the classified section was to be a non- moderated area, but the requests for moderation were increasing.

This is one of the few times that a change was made to make it easier on those who moderate and administer.  Usually it has been the other way round.

resolved by my suggested rule#1 and #2

I can understand that, I've modded forums before.
Just seems like a nuke to solve the problem rather than just stating clearly what the rules are.

To the moderation  being eased. It also was a board that should not need any moderation to begin with. But was becoming one of the most moderated sections due to people being down right nasty.   Hence the rules change. So the deal is Classifieds  are just that. And  the current structure should be able to be used as such and perform the classified function well.  Like a newspaper.

Also, we do not mind doing a little work when it comes to moderating and making sure people were following the FOG guidelines, goes with the territory. But in the classifieds it was rediculous.

Yeah I get it.

Just wish an in between method had been attempted first.
I think in a responsible forum, if you state what the rules are and have gentle reminders for the most part members will self-regulate. oh well

The only thing I miss is the ability to post "PM Sent", that way others know an offer to buy or sell may be out there.

Maybe they could add a feature to send PMs directly from the classified pages and have a counter for such messages -- "N private messages were sent from this page from a total of N unique users.".

Might that be a clean way to solve that problem and make the page somewhat more convenient for those interested in what is offered?

my thoughts

If you sign up to be a moderator then moderate. if you stoped people replying in other areas as well then you could cut the moderating even more. [wink]

Why do Festool accessories only have a two month guarantee here in the UK ?
