Outdoor Granite Sealer Advice
« on: August 26, 2021, 08:02 PM »
Hey Guys.

I just bought my dream house - yes I will finally have a workshop and garage as well as a bunch of other goodies and treats.

One of the goodies and treats is an outdoor kitchen with granite countertops.  Anyone have guidance on a granite sealing system for exterior granite?  The countertops are semi protected by a roof.

Any help would be appreciated.

Peter

Congrats! I have yet to find and afford our dream home. Mostly afford...

I've been using Laticrete StoneTech for awhile now and so far have no complaints. Laticrete products serve me well even when using them with Schluter products. Although I use Schluter All-Set mostly now. Absolutely hate the Laticrete equivalent of Ditra though.

Good reminder that I need to re-apply sealer to one of our bathroom floors made of Turkish limestone with fossils as it is a beach theme.

I have a granite side table beside my barbecue grill that I built a good 10 years ago. I have done absolutely nothing to it and it still looks fabulous.

thats awesome Peter getting yer dream house. We expet a lot ofpostings and pictures of projects as you make it yours.
depending on the climate i think you should be ok with a reg OTS sealer. The sealer just protects the stone from being stained etc....

FYI : I could be wrong but I havent heard of any special sealer for outdoor granite. Maybe call a specialty store that deals with outdoor / patio installations and talk to them to confirm

When I asked the guy I bought my table top from what I needed to do to maintain it, he looked at me funny and asked, "You been to a cemetery lately?"

[big grin]  That's a great answer Jeff, it pretty much puts things into perspective.  [big grin]

The only issue I can anticipate is if the owner wanted to maintain the polished, glossy granite surface (then again, maybe the granite has been vapor honed or bead blasted). I can see where normal atmospheric/pollution conditions may affect the gloss level.

Granite does stain. I have seen it with my own eyes. Spending a few dollars and minutes sealing is valid. Probably about the same amount of time as trying to remove a stain should one happen. Red wine...oops!

It’s happened to me…a friend stopped over a few months after I installed a white granite floor in the front entry. While we were admiring it she accidentally dropped her glass of red wine. I lived with those stains for about 4 years until I ripped it out and installed some Vermont purple slate…sealed.
