Centrotec Drill Bit Storage
« on: December 19, 2011, 02:49 PM »
I recently picked up a T15+3 drill kit and also purchased a complete set of metric centrotec bits, the kind that allow bit replacement in the holder such as this:   Festool 493427 Twist Drill Bit Set D6.0/57.  Then I ordered a mini systainer with the drill bit inserts, only to find that the centrotec bits with holder don't fit the insert.  So, what to do.  I'm not about to just toss the bits in a compartment, so I have them wrapped in a cloth shop rag, but that is pretty tedious every time you need to access and return a bit.  So....

How about offering as a stand alone the case that comes with the Imperial set 496942?  If not, what are my other options that will still fit in the systainer that came with the drill (charger removed).

I have mine in the attic compartment of my Systainer. I put some small-bubble bubble wrap in and they stay pretty still that way.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them going forward. My new demo drills (C 15 & T 18) came in T-Locs with no attic and no extra space.

I'd think a good woodworker could make an inlay to fit the sys mini without too much effort. I've been planning to make something like this myself for all my Centrotec stuff, but I haven't come around to it yet.

If you look at the picture below you might get an idea of how Festool/Protool does it. The principle is simply: make a row with nubs in which you can clamp the bits right where the indent is. Then make a proper support for the rest of the bit.

How about this...?  I read about it in the latest edition of "Fine Woodworking".

I intend to order some and try it out.  Looks like it may work with the Centrotec drill bits the OP was asking about.

Looking for simple, cheap, effective?
Go to your local fabric, craft store. Around here JoAnn Fabrics, big place has everything. I've been to various chains though. They all sell various types and sizes of foam at pretty cheap prices. Stuff cuts easily with scissors or a drywall knife, protects whatever you set into it. Works great as Sys inserts.
WARNING - Don't take the wife with or the trip could cost you a whole lot more than you expect.

I never thought of JoAnn's Fabrics.  They are about 3 miles from my house and I pass one every time I visit Costco on the weekend.

Never understood why Festool did not bring out the fabric tool holders like the ones made by Snappy.
Looks very handy when taking the Centrotec pieces on a job site. And much smaller then a Systainer.
The smaller ones can even be hung on a belt.
The Snappy versions are for 60-30 and 22 pieces.
