In the US (at least) the OF1010 comes with two collets, but I don't see a place it the Systainer for the collet that not installed – am I missing something, or do I just toss it in and be done with it?

There is a little round insert at the bottom of the Systainer below where the router sits - it can be a snug fit. I think the picture on the Systainer shows it.

I wonder if they redesigned the insert. Mine doesn’t have a socket for the collet and the picture doesn’t show one either. It also looks like the fine adjuster goes under the router loose.

Mine does not have a good place to store the collet either.

Unfortunately Festool in all their wisdom...probably redesigned the insert.

I think @Cheese is correct about the redesigned insert.

The OF1010 that I purchased from Festool Products a few weeks ago has an insert that looks like pictures @rmhinden posted. When I got the router, the extra collet was just laying on the bottom of the systainer in the right rear corner. It looked odd at the time, but nothing appeared damaged.

Currently I have the spare collet in the small pocket on the left-hand side of the insert, where the lid illustration shows the edge guide. Although there seems to be enough space below or inside of the chip catcher for the extra collet.

I'm also considering the idea of removing the insert to install a nylon bolt with wing nut to hold the extra collet. Could do this somewhere in the flat spot near the collet wrench.

The most annoying part of the old insert has to be the fact that the wrench is located under everything! Nice to see they redid the insert, might pick it up.

The wrench just sits in a notch. It’s trapped between the insert and the Systainer. I would probably try modifying the existing insert before buying a new one.

FWIW...the number of the old 1010 insert is 700 852.

I don't have time to think about it for a day or two, but I'm thinking it should be easy to design a 3D printable piece that you drill a hole in the existing insert, insert the new piece, thread a 3D printed nut to secure it, and it provides threads the spare collet can attach to. Shouldn't be that big a deal and I'll share the design online once I come up with it.

Funny, last night I was scrounging through my 1010 systainer wondering if it even included the 8mm collet. I grumbled because there didn’t appear to be a dedicated place for it like the 1400. Eventually I found it after dumping the contents only to find the 8mm bits bind in the collet (takes a lot of force to insert and remove) and the collet gets stuck in the router once the bit is inserted. Very odd and the 1/4” collet is not like this at all. Might have to order up a new 8mm collet, hopefully that resolves it.

That's weird, I wonder if the collet was over tightened at one point? Maybe some rust/corrosion inside the collet?

I recently purchased the OF 1010 through the recon sale. The router looked as if it had never been used. I was able to remove the collet nut but the preinstalled 8mm collet itself remained on the shaft.

I spoke to the service department and, after being unable to remove the collet, returned it and they were able to remove it and install the 1/4” collet. I sent it in on a Wednesday and had it back on the following Tuesday. Excellent service!

You just ruined a perfectly good excuse to buy a bunch of bits on 8mm shanks!!!

No rust that I could see. Nothing appeared damaged either. I got the router just over a year ago, I think this is the first time I used the 8mm collet. I’ll give it another once over this weekend and if I can’t figure it out I’ll ask Festool if I can just mail back the collet since the 1/4” works just fine. Seems a waste to ship them the entire tool.

Do you have a way to measure it? Maybe you ended up with two 1/4” collets?

I believe the collets are laser engraved with the size.

It most definitely is an 8. I measured it at 7.84mm ID.

Update in case anyone stumbles on this, Festool was kind enough to mail a new collet out rather than having me ship the tool back. The new collet works as expected. The ID of the new collet is roughly 0.1mm larger that the collet I was having issues with. Never encountered an out of spec collet before, but I guess it can happen.

I designed and just posted to Thingiverse a design for a 3D printed holder for the extra collet - you'd drill a 1/2" hole in an open spot on the insert and install this piece with the printed nut that comes with it. Then you can easily thread the extra collet on/off, I designed it to be an easy loose fit so it won't be fiddly. I printed one and tested the fit, but haven't installed it yet.
