traveling with Festool 18v batteries
« on: January 22, 2023, 03:46 PM »
I need to take a flight next month and I want to bring my TID18 with me.  Are those batteries approved to be brought on an airplane?  it's 1.5 hr flight vs a 10 hour drive so flying is the preferable way to travel.

@HowardH my understanding of the rules is that the batteries CANNOT go into a checked bag. They MUST be in a carry on bag. The thinking is that the cabin crew can deal with fire/smoke if they know about it because it’s in the cabin. Can’t do that if they are tucked into the hold.

They also suggest you place batteries in their own container within your bag so you can easily remove them if they make you gate check your carry on.

They are also limited to 100Wh each. For your 18V batteries, that limits them to the 5Ah packs but I doubt you're bringing a 6Ah pack for the TID.

I'd have to look but I'm only bringing one battery. I have to install 4 long screws for a floating night stand I built and I seriously doubt my brother, who doesn't know which end of a screwdriver to hold and who's favorite tool is a credit card, has a proper drill for the job.

The 5.2Ah batteries aren't a problem, they are in the low 90's speaking of watt hours, well below the 100 watt hours threshold. Same goes for the "old" 3Ah or "new" 4Ah.

If you want to be "extra special good", put some masking tape over both rows of contacts and put it in an extra container that goes into your carry on.

No one will give you any trouble for a single power tool battery. As long as it meets the basic requirements stated above. :)

Oliver

That's good.  It's a ten hour drive from Dallas to Birmingham...  vs. a 1.5 flight...

Are you checking other stuff? Unless the rules have changed you won’t be able to have the drill or other tools in a carry-on. For the usual $50.00 bag fee, you could just about gift your brother an almost new drill that you buy there.

Having paid my dues of commuting to airports, a 10 hour drive vs a 1.5 hour flight would be a hard choice  [smile]

@HowardH pixelated makes a good BBQ point, you can’t put the drill in your carry on. It has to go in a checked bag along with the drill bits an probably the screws.

Fortunately, in a prior job, I traveled a lot so I have accumulated enough miles to be Gold with AA for life so I get a free checked bag.   :). That's about all it's worth.  I'll just bring a slightly bigger suitcase and put everything I may need in the systainer and put that in the suitcase.

Except the battery, that still has to be in carry-on, right?

My understanding is the battery is on the carryon and the tool itself must be checked.  Never heard of anyone hijacking a plane with an impact drill but I guess there's a first for everything.

TSA Rules on Drills and Drill Bits.

I'd say no go based on this. You'll have to check the drill and carry the batteries. BTW Dewalt includes plastic covers that slide onto their drills to cover the terminals when transporting. There must be a reason they include it if no other company provides it.

That would have made an incredible alternative ending for Die Hard 2.

Instead of the fights between Major Grant; Colonel Stuart vs. John McLane. John could have unscrewed the wings of that 747.

Now that I can see it, I want it! ;)

I tried to take my Rotex sander in my carry on.  TSA said it had to be checked. So I had to call the person who dropped me off to come pick it up.

My daughter had moved her studio into a new space and I went over to help.  I just bought whatever tools I needed and left them with her, thinking I’ll be back soon for other projects.  Turns out I didn’t need the Rotex anyway so didn’t leave one with her. 😁

You might just buy a driver from Home Depot and return it. Or leave it with your brother.

I’m not sure how you were figuring flying vs driving time but don’t forget to factor in getting to airport early, having someone take you and pick you up twice, all the airport hassles, limited space, etc.

The definitive answer to the question, "What can I bring?" is here - https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/all.  Just remember this - "The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint."
