Recommended non-Festool router bits for MFK700
« on: February 19, 2020, 12:56 AM »
I bit the bullet on Festool router bit 491666 (Festool HW Two Flute Edge Trimming Cutter - D19, NLB16, L46) as its perfectly sized for edge trimming with the MFK700 in the horizontal position, but about twice as expensive as it should be at $55 USD.

I'm guessing I'm not the only person who has shopped around for alternatives that fit the MFK700 - overall length of the bit seems to be the issue here (must be less than 1-58" OAL). Do you have a favorite straight cutter for the MFK700 for use in horizontal edge trimming that isn't $55 USD?

On a related note, for roundover bits, does Festool recommend avoiding the horizontal position because of the 1.5° offset? It seems their roundover images all show the typical vertical router orientation. Same question here - do you use a special (shorter) roundover bit? The ones I tested were too long, even with the base fully extended. I miss the travel of a Micro-Fence full plunge base on the Colt palm router I used to have...

I recently bought one of these,

https://www.wealdentool.com/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=700%20mfk&PN=MFK%2dEdge%2dRouter%2ehtml#aT2631_2d8

but...
1) I haven't used it yet; and...

2) I've just noticed they don't ship to USA/Canada...

Sorry - that wasn't very helpful was it, but it guess it does mean there are suitable bits out there.

CMT 191.007.11 for running 6mm grooves in cabinets. It cuts it at 6.35mm.

Here's my notes on the MFK: https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/festool-how-to/mfk-700-getting-started-tips/

Ryan - I also bit the bullet on the Festool cutter for horizontal operation.  As you mentioned, overall length is challenging on the MFK.  For vertical operations, I've used some 1/4" shank bits from my collection with great results.  The last one I used was a flush trim with a bearing to flush up a face frame to plywood veneer.  Results were stellar.  My recommendation for vertical is to use the bit of your choice (Whiteside/Freud/etc).

For roundover, you should be able to go vertical, then you don't have the length limitation and the 1.5 degree base doesn't come into play.

I bought the Wealden cutter for mine and got great results from it trimming oak lippings. I've not tried the Festool one to compare against it mind you...

I also highly recommend the Half Inch Shy mod for allowing flushing up thicker lippings and using longer cutters.
