Hi,

My MFK 700 just arrived and I am eager to use it to trim same edge banding. However, I am not sure about the best setup for different types of banding. I see three options:

- Zero Degree Horizontal Base with edge trimming cutter
- 1.5 Degree Horizontal Base with edge trimming cutter
- Vertical base with radius router bit for edge banding

Which option is best for wood veneer edge banding? Which one for laminate edge banding? When do you prefer 0 versus 1.5 degree base?

Thanks!

The 0° is more for wider/thicker edgebanding as the 1.5° will create a gap along the face when you put two pieces together.

there are 2 different kits and neither include the 0 degree base if I remember correctly.  if you cut your own hardwood strips to glue on for edgebanding you will want the 0.  If its edgebanding tape around 1mm you will want the 1.5 or vertical base.

That's right, at least in the US. The zero degree base is optional and fits either of the sets. I would consider it essential, but that would not necessarily apply to everyone. It is most useful for wider/thicker edges.

One question about the 0 degree base: It costs the same at the 1.5 degree base in the U.S. but seems to exclude the bearing set and dust hood. Is that correct? That makes it really annoying if you have the EQB and want the 0 degree base. Or am I missing something?

I think that you are correct. you would need to buy the bearing assembly from parts if you bought the eqb.  I bought the kit but based on the photos on festool usa I dont see the bearing in the eqb.  I bought the kit and just bought the parts to convert the regular base to the eqb base. The mfk is one of the more confusing kits festool sells.

Yes, I also believe you are correct.

The 1.5 degree base comes with the hood and bear, the 0 degree does not.   You can get the bearing from toolnut, but I don’t see the dust hood sold separately there.

One other item I would suggest is doing this mod to the 0 degree base,

http://www.halfinchshy.com/2010/12/extending-capacity-of-mfk-700.html

And getting a 8mm collet, with a 8mm bit.

You can trim 3/4 edge band and use it to trim down dominos on drawers.

Mine came with 2 bases .

Looks like they still do

Yes, the regular set comes with the vertical base(the one with the round opening) and the 1.5 degree horizontal base(which can also hold the motor vertically)
The zero degree base is an add-on accessory that doesn't come as standard equipment with any of the sets.
It seems that they assume that a person who would buy the zero degree base is coming from the regular set, rather than the EQB? since the dust extraction hood and follower bearing are part of that set.
The EQB base is available separately too. It seems to me that if a guy wants all of the bases, it would be best to get the regular set first, since it has the extra parts.

agreed, better to buy the set with the horz. base and add the zero base if needed and the parts to convert the vertical base to the EQB base which is basically an extra phenolic plate and a bearing brake.  "IF" you need or want it.
