Title: Longer dominos?
Post by: slackula@gmail.com on January 31, 2021, 09:38 PM
I have an idea for vinyl record shelving that involves a through tenon through the shelf and into the dividers top and bottom.
6mm dominos only come in 40mm size which would only give me 10 mm or so into the dividers.
I see Festool does longer sticks where you can cut your own but not in 6mm.
Is there an after market solution? I really don't want to make my own.

Would 8mm work? They come in 750mm sticks.

Do you have access to a table saw or a bandsaw? The tenons don’t have to be beech. Several folks have made their own tenons.

I thought about 8mm but that only gives me 5mm or so of ply either side of the divider and I'm worried they'll tear out. I've read on this forum that it's a no-no and some use 5mm wide dominos.
Like I said, i don't want to make my own.

I have never had a problem using 8mm Dominos on 3/4 material. I do it all the time.
You need to do some test pieces & see how it works for you.

I use 8mm for hardwood and 6mm for other materials like softwood and plywood. Extract of manual attached.

I'm not aware of any longer 6mm tenons available for sale. Everyone who needs them makes those tenons themselves. For your divider application, I'd make them out of 6mm plywood as close as to the width of the mortise but not to its full width. I wouldn't even bother to round over the edges to streamline the process. Just rip and cross cut to the desired length.

Consider this...Festool makes the D8/50 line specifically for use in 3/4" materials.

Took me a bit to remember where I saw this stuff:

I haven't used the LV tenons before, but I found on a few occasions that 1/4" plywood and 6mm plywood (often billed as the same) were not the same at all.

The OP could try a strip before buying all he needs.

I haven’t used these either. Mathematically, the LV tenons should be slightly thicker than the slot cut by the DF500. The adjustment is small enough that a few passes over the LV tenons with a sander can get them to fit.

Thank you all for the replies. Very helpful.
I'm going to try the Lee Valley ones and probably make some with 6mm ply.
