is it all short on stock or only me?
« on: March 01, 2021, 10:23 AM »
buying my very first TSC 55 and sander, not a single one in stock in my aera, Im from Canada.
is this means they are refreshing the products? maybe just changing the package to new sys3? or maybe just add cordless sander to the line?

So, there is a global shortage of all Festool Stuff. Almost every festool dealer is stripped to the shelves of everything.

Sys 3 change over has caused some items to be gone for bits of time. You also have people hunting down the old versions to avoid Sys 3.

Festool did just announce a new version of the TSC55, I doubt it's shipping in Europe yet, and it tends to take 1/2-1 year for things to show up in the new world.  You will have to decide if it is worth the wait for the new version to you.

So yeah, finding one could be a challenge right now.   You might want to keep an eye on the Festool Recon site, I think it's available to Canadians too.

Price jump in Jan stripped most things in Dec.  I got the last RTS and Domino in my area then.  My other supplier that's more online seems to be ordering pallets on demand, which has it's requisite slow-down.  I've been given roughly 6-8 week wait times the last few things I tried ordering.  Off beat things like hand sanding blocks and sheets seem to have even more delay - probably because of less warehousing PoP.

Here in Copenhagen we have a well assorted physical store with good selection of Festool items. So I pretty well covered there. On the other hand I ordered sandpaper and centrotec bits from a company in Germany and haven't heard anything for 10 days on when they will be shipping.

I've dealt with them before and it's a solid company but previously I had a wait of 4 months for something that deeply disturbing, I think I found another supplier for a time, better prices too. But they have since disappeared, so I returned to my other company as they list absolutely every available Festool and for the most part deliver in a timely fashion.

...

Are you looking online or talking with local dealers?  Given the general supply-chain issues because of COVID-19, I would probably talk with local dealers about getting on a call list or possibly pre-ordering.

Also, if you know exactly which tools you want to buy, then consider getting the accessories (e.g. sandpaper) ahead of the tool itself.  Bascially, buy what you can when you see it.

yeah, I checked both the main online stores (leevally and atlas tool)and local dealers, no luck....I did find the combo kit for TSC though, but its might be really wired to use 5.2 ah battery on OSC which i also looking for getting. I guess I will just get T18 E and OSC for now and wait for tsc back in stock

FWIW...this is directly from the Festool USA web site:

So unless this is due to repackaging TS 75's into SYS³ Systainers, this is new to me. I have never seen where the Temporarily Unavailable label has been added to a Festool website.

TS75 is no longer on the German site at all (but it is on the 2021 catalog).

I would guess Festool decided to optimize/streamline manufacturing given the shortages and the TS75 ended up with the short end of the stick.

Either way, it is still available in a few shops in Europe, but nothing rosy. Most list it as available in a week, which leads me to believe there is little stock in the channel and those are default listings.

Lets hope this is temporary, but would not hold high hopes for it to re-appear before the stock situation with the new TS/TSC gets better.

Looking at it again, it seems the HK55 likely faced the same faith of being asked to "give way" to the more popular tools on the manufacturing lines. Festool is a small company so they share manufacturing line for multiple tools. One obvious way to increase total production with the same tools/people is to temporarily reduce the frequency of switching between producing different tools on the lines hence reducing the idle time.

One last.
Festool has a big factory in Czech Republic (the Narex plant ta Ceska Lipa) where they make a lot of their tools. And there was just introduced a pretty tight lockdown this Monday over here.

The industry is still opened with some restrictions (respirators and mandatory tests) but the schools are completely closed so a lot o parents have to stay home to care for the kids.
This even if no quarantines hit the employees of TTS would still have the ability to affect production rates in a non-trivial way.

Especially given bad luck you can easily loose the bulk of a certain profession/role and that can put a whole line to a crawl as re-training people is not a one-day task if you have the quality standards Festool has.

Similarly, Germany is under a (less strict) lockdown for a long period by now.

Asked the same thing of my local Festool dealer (central Michigan, USA).  He has ample supply of abrasives, one 1010 router and some odds and ends.  His feel is the supply chain is broken, that is, lack of containers at ports, lack of truck drivers, production limitations etc.  Similar story from other US and non-US suppliers.  My take-away was there wasn't one major thing effecting the supply shortages at least in this region.

Well, pretty slim pickings...a good selection of consumables but a pretty slim choice of main-stream equipment. Here's a shot of available tools and most of them have a label attached which stipulates that they are a DEMO ITEM ONLY. I'd take that means NOT FOR SALE TODAY.

Just not a lot to see...and no-one is happy about that. I ordered some DTS pads and it took 30+ days to receive them. Normally it'd be a 1 week window. Ordered some more parts today, we'll see how long it takes.

This is a world-wide phenomenon as every industry is effected. Guns...ammunition...cameras...camera lenses...mechanical watches...the list goes on.

Shipping has been bad lately for a lot of stuff but somehow not Amazon... seems a little fishy to me.

Truckers are not in short supply, not in the US. They have been willing to work 100% of the time since the start.

Luckily my local Festool dealer had some items I wanted that were selling out. I’m tempted to go back for more but I am no where near the “make your tools pay for themselves” this spring (yet).

Well, amazon is its own shipping, so that won't be an issue.

I think you are just seeing COVID catch up after a year.  Some production drops here and there, a delay or too, so on an do forth, after a year, small things add up. In time, you just run out of parts, your supplier can't make parts, someone can't ship something. One companies backup pushes stuff for someone else off.

My local Woodcraft has some Festool tools - picked up the TID18/T18 combo on Sunday. They are getting low on several items, though. Another dealer says they have not received a delivery from Festool in a few months. Unfortunate reality.

Woodcraft in Minneapolis. Like Bert said, it's the Festool store-within-a-store merchandiser. You need some real estate to make it work and look good. When yesterday's purchases finally arrive, I'll take a few more photos for you.  [smile]

Their method is to have an assortment of Demo Tools in their work shop that you can use and test drive. Then there is a pretty complete set of Display Tools located in the photo area for people to touch and feel. When you want to purchase a New Tool, those items are brought out from the storage area in the back of the store in sealed Systainers so that you feel confident that all of the items are in there and 1 or 2 haven't been pilfered.

With the present situation, there aren't many New Tools in the storage area and some of the Display Tools have been sold so the Demo Tools are used for display instead just to plug the holes. Some of these Demo Tools are pretty rough looking because some have been used for several years.

Demo tools would be amazing.  It's one thing to pick up a driver and free-spin it, it's another to feel how it reacts when bits start to bite.

Festool is more of an after-thought at my local dealer, which has pros and cons.  Pro: they have multi-year-old tools NIB available to be purchased if you're looking for something rare/discontinued. Con: pretty much everything else that comes along with having a retailer that isn't knowledgeable in a product.

Additional con, as Cheese pointed out with the sealed tools in storage: I have no idea if a tool sitting in the Systainer has been opened once or ten dozen times, if it has all of the items that should be included, and whether or not someone has swapped out the batteries or done anything else untoward with the merchandise.

As bad as the Woodcraft situation is, I just noticed that ACME's situation is close to critical. They're basically wiped out of Festool tools and consumables.

NO jigsaws, Dominos, routers, planers, only a couple of track saws and a couple of sanders is what they have available.

@RustE
Ya it's just across town...they're my number 2 Festool destination.  [smile]

Yesterday at Woodcraft I attempted to purchase bags for the MIDI...none available so rather than order them and wait, I figured I'd just purchase them from ACME.

This morning I logged in to ACME to purchase the bags and then I could go over and pick them up. Unfortunately, they don't have any bags either and that's when I noticed that 85% of Festool items were not available.

I've had a tool addiction for many years now so more than well stocked on every front for present and future projects. But the sandpaper I just ordered are slow to arrive. Have enough for the foreseeable future.

What I think I'll save up for a the bigger items bandsaw, beltsander. And just start using what I have more, lots of projects that need to be done in the gardens that I take care of..

Jeez Cheese, my local Woodcraft Festool display is about a third of that, maybe less.

Ya, the owner has a pretty liberal stocking policy to say the least. Yesterday I noticed the small Festool metric tape measure was no longer on the pegboard so I asked one of the guys if it was obsoleted. He replied that the owner was in a few weeks ago and instituted a new Festool stocking policy...if 2 or less of any item were sold within a YEAR, then they'd no longer inventory the item.   [blink] [blink]

Consequently,  the content just keeps growing.  [cool]

I've never been to mine here. Ok it's out in the valley though... Pretty sure my local place that carries a fair bit pays their employees a lot more since Woodcraft is like min wage - easy choice for me.

Love the Mafell section  [not worthy] [not worthy] [not worthy]

Hey Matt @DynaGlide  what are those green cords next to the jigsaw blades in the Festool display used for? I've never seen them before.

These are PUR-cables. (Oil and flame resistant, highly flexible). Similar to the orange extension cords from the same material.

Well thanks for that... [smile] and they are different than the black variety in what way/usage?  When to use green, when to use black?

No Velvet rope around the mafell section?  No signs telling folks Portable Band Saws make great stocking stuffers? No "ask about our 96 month payment plans" ?    [tongue]

They are less flexible and the material is very strong - you can pretty much run them over by a lorry without a risk of the cable bursting. They are also oil-resistant as mentioned so will not decompose if put in an oil dump in car shop etc. At this thickness level, these are the strongest cables I have seen in normal use.

In practice they are a bit stiffer so are better (mode predictable) when used tied-in with a hose. But for standalone use the stiffness can be a disadvantage in turn. Unlike with "stiff" rubber cables the stiffness comes from the insulation material which is very hard not form thickness or from the wire itself. I like them also for the color - easy to see at all times where the cable is.

Not sure how old the photo is, but Mafell didn't get to the T-locs until more recently, but they do now ship stuff in T-locs.

Ya, when I ordered my P1 CC a couple of years ago, I fully expected it to arrive in a Gen I because that's all they showed on the website. Surprise, it showed up in a T-Loc instead.  [big grin]

Festool stores here in Holland are just as empty, it's making me cry inside.

I have never seen a display with Mafell tools before, that's an incredible rare sight.

The green pur cords are very stiff, I had one and I didn't like it at all. Seems indestructable though, the cable itself, but the Plug-It part breaks just as easily as with the normal ones.

These are PUR-cables. (Oil and flame resistant, highly flexible). Similar to the orange extension cords from the same material.

Well thanks for that... [smile] and they are different than the black variety in what way/usage?  When to use green, when to use black?

I learnt from a specialist Festool dealer in Stockholm that the green PUR cables was favoured by typical car body shops, furniture makers and so forth who work with delicate surfaces.
These cables do apparently not easily leave marks as the black ones can do. I have one as spare, and it seems a little bit more rigid.

buying my very first TSC 55 and sander, not a single one in stock in my aera, Im from Canada.
is this means they are refreshing the products? maybe just changing the package to new sys3? or maybe just add cordless sander to the line?

Cheese, I wonder what is up with the TS75s that have popped up lately?
I got one a few weeks ago after someone posted about US Tool & Fastener having them in stock. At least a few other members here got them too.
Mine came in a T-loc Systainer. I guess that these could have been sitting in some warehouse somewhere and just got discovered?
Maybe the "unavailable until further notice" is the new stock coming out of the factory? Maybe those will be in new Sys3?

I receive a product alert notice from US Tool & Fastener for the Domino 700. Don't recall signing up for that, but I checked the 500 set and it's in stock. Same place that sent me the notice on the TS 75. I, of course, jumped all over the 500. It's in a T-Loc container and was manufactured 2021-02.

They could have also decided to make a batch from available spare parts stock ..

Either way, combining the elevated demand with supply chain and workforce restrictions going off just about now across Europe, I would not expect available stock situation to get significantly better till Q4 or so as it will take some time for the dealers to re-stock even after back-orders are filled. And then comes another x-mas season ..

Finger in the air: Expect a return to "normal" around Q2 2022.

Ref. the dates posted, knowing production plants are in operation and not closed, I would suspect these dates are missing context. Most likely these were not "when we can make some" but more of "we project the supply will meet demand at this time" type of dates.

I hate it when stuff like this leaks from a project team even internally in a company.
A simple "what-if" scenario can easily be taken for a "plan" and just wastes everyone's time to damage-control the confusion.
