interchangeable vac parts?
« on: February 12, 2021, 05:50 AM »
I currently have an older midi vac, and am looking to get a second (can't have enough vacs, and I'm afraid the one I have may go sometime soon).  I was hoping to grab a newer model on the recon sale, but they only have the new Mini (If I'm lucky enough to purchase at precisely the moment the site is live before they shut it down again).  I really want like the extra bag capacity of the midi.
My question is, Can I take the entire upper housing (motor, filter, garage...everything that comes off when you open it to change bags) from the new Mini and use it on my older Midi base so I can still use the same larger capacity bags?  My understanding is the height or internal area which stores the filter bag is the only difference, so they should be swappable.  Also not sure of new vs. old design- is the only difference the blue tooth control area or have they modified the outer plastic mold somehow?
Thanks in advance.

The new Midi I design is completely different from the older type. You can not swap anything out between them.

---------

But as for the older generation Mini & Midi, you can change out the bases just fine, if you mean that. I have a 2006 Mini and a 2018 Midi.

Here are the bases swapped. Notice how much more the older Mini is yellowed.

One tiny little thing IS actually different. The bags of the vacs have these little indents. For some reason those of the Mini & Midi are not in the same place, weirdest design decision ever. Why on earth is this needed? Is Festool so afraid you'd use the wrong bag in the wrong vac? I sure hope this won't cause a fraction in our space-time continuum.

Result is, if you use a bag in a different tub, the bag does not seat entirely 100% and can cause a leak. This happened to me twice. Just cut the indent in the bag and you're fine.

Huh, the older ones don't share bags, so why would you want to use the wrong sized bag?  [huh]

Maybe I was out of of Midi bags and had a few Mini bags left?

Except for those little nibs they accept eachother's bags just fine.

Won't the mini bag rupture more easily in the Midi's tank?

No. The cloth bags don't rupture.

Oddest thing, paper bags work fine in my older Mini, but if I put paper Midi bags in the 2018 Midi, they rupture.

I've had paper bags rupture in my CT 22. I think the last one of my paper bags is now in the CT... or just out of it. I have a supply of cloth bags for the CT 22 now. The price difference is paid for by not having it rupture 1/4th full..

That is because the new MINI & MIDI have a lot more suction than the old MINI & MIDI. The paper bags do not have enough air flow for the new vacs.
