Festool Domino DF 500 FUNNY N00B story....
« on: January 08, 2021, 12:02 AM »
So i treated myself this holiday season amd got myself some Festool products. I got myself the Domino + assortments, CT Midi, ETS EC 125/3 and some clamps. Today for the first time I put the domino to use. I was building some drawers and wanted to try the domino for allignment only, used pocket screws to tighten everything. Anyways i wanted to use the flip stops from each end for 2 dominos to register the sides (12” deep drawers).  I wanted to use the 4mm dominos because I was using 1/2” (12mm) ply for sides/front/back/bottom in addition have the most of the 4mm dominos. So i unscrew the factory 5mm cutter, screw in the 4mm cutter, watch Sedge on how he uses the extra reference plate, adjust the depth of cut to 12mm as that was the lowest available and cut some on some test pieces. The depth was soooo shallow i was like WTF is this, why isnt it working like i see on the videos.

When you cannot figure out why the mortises are so shallow you just adjust the depth stop and keep trying. When i reached the 20mm depth setting and plunging to both pieces the domino fit great. So i keep on plunging tru all the parts, cur my dados for the bottom panel, some pocket screws to keep it together and assemble. After the assembly I remove the 4mm cutter and put in the 5mm cutter, well what do you know suddenly a light bulb went on. The 4mm cutter’s shaft is apparently half the length as compared to 5, 6, 8, and 10mm cutters. Aha, not the 20mm cutting depth makes sense, since the cutter is half the length you need to compensate by doubling the cutter depth from 10mm (half of the 4x20 domino) to 20mm.

It was a good day for a self-taught lesson. Phewwww went bonkers there for a bit cursing left and right. As the guys from The Garage Journal on YT said “the best tools in the world do not make a good craftsman”.

Once you understand the Domino settings, it's amazing, but there is a learning curve and you hit one of the bumps for the 4mm cutter. It's special haha! Take any of the failures as learning opportunities. If I had to give up all my Festools except one, this would be the keeper.

OMG I did not know (or check) that. I have always been wondering, never challenging Festool of course, and just recently had a structure break on me with the 4mm dominos. That explains it, learned something today. Thank you Gentlemen.

My Domino experience was joining to 3’ boards with a tenon every 6”. The two boards didn’t come even close to fitting. When I looked at the mortises, they marched lower and lower down the length of the board.

I had not tightened the fence. Took me way too long to figure it out. Doh.
