Creating a slat door for a media cabinet
« on: February 12, 2020, 07:49 AM »
I would like to have a slat door for a media cabinet.  The slats should be horizontal to minimize the interference with the center channel speaker and infrared changer beams.  Has anyone created something like this?  Have you used a Domino for the slat joinery?

I've looked at many photos of media cabinets but can't figure out the technique they use for attaching the slats.  Glue only?  Pin nails from the back?  Dominos?

Not sure what kind of slats you have in mind, but I did something that sounds similar to your description?  I just made shallow grooves in the door frame and glued the slats on--plenty strong.  BTW, I used cabinet hinges, and had to get ones designed for thicker doors.

If there's a Design Within Reach in your area, they have some similar stuff and you can examine their construction methods.

That's a cool looking slat door, Cider!

Routing grooves and gluing seems like the most straightforward way to make doors like that.
The Domino is awesome and I like finding excuses to use it, but I think it would add unnecessary complication.

From a procedural standpoint - take all of your stiles and lay them all butted up next to each other.  That way you'll ensure all your routed lines end up on the same line.  From there, you could use an OF router on a track with the edge guide.  You could use a router table with stop blocks or Incra LS.  You could even use a Kapex to create the grooves.
Just depends on what kind of tools you have.
