Post by: Thompmd on June 14, 2020, 10:34 AM
Using for hobby, mostly cutting a profile w/bits? Any advice appreciated

I would definitely add on the edge guide.  To support expanded capacity routing off the edge with the fence, I also bought some extra long 8mm rods (https://www.mcmaster.com/metal-rods/steel/system-of-measurement~metric/diameter~8millimeters/) from McMaster Carr.

I find the table widener (https://www.festoolproducts.com/festool-493233-table-widener-of-1400.html) to be helpful as well, though if I were getting the router today, I would probably make my own version since I now have that capacity.  I forget, but you may have to purchase the extra large chip catcher separately that goes with the table widener.

The guide stops too if you want to do rail guided routing.

I second what Edward said about the table widener.  I felt that was quite important and added to stability when I was using the 1400.  I think the chip catcher came with the TW, but I bought mine many years ago and maybe FT has changed that offering now.

I would also like to ask that I read somewhere the 36mm hose does a noticeably better job with dust/chip collection?? Has this been your experience?

@Thompmd Yes, the larger hose makes a substantial difference with this router, though I will sometimes still use the 27mm if I'm in the middle of something and too lazy to switch.

As always, thank you all . For example , I keep a Short (5’)Dedicated piece of 36mm Hose hooked to my Kapex so it takes just a second to swap. Once I feel comfortable with a length/location of the Router I’ll do something similar with a dedicated 36mm hose.

Most All of these come from you guys and it’s much appreciated.

I found the 36mm hose too stiff and unwieldy to use with the OF1400 and went back to the smaller hose. Assuming that for bigger cuts you are sneaking up using 2-3 smaller cuts I found the smaller hose is fine for dust extraction.

Interesting point, being new how often do you make more than one pass ? I’ve only made 1 and had no trouble?

I’ve only used on hardwood so far, mostly Walnut.

I’ve used my Bosch 1617 and new 1/2” Freud bits so they’re sharp.
