AGC-18 and 3.1ah batteries?
« on: February 18, 2021, 01:47 PM »
Question: Would an AGC-18 work fine with 18V 3.1ah batteries?

I'm assuming so given that the voltage matches.

Obviously it would not have the run time of the 5.2ah batteries but if you are using it mostly for short periods of usage, battery life won't matter that much.

Smaller batteries give less power. Not apparent in some devices, but noticeable in others. Grinders tend to be pretty power hungry.

Yes.

But you want to do so only for VERY light use.
The AGC18 is one little power sucker!

In the manual, there is below statement explicitly stating compliance when used with specific batteries including the 3,1 one:

2) gilt in Kombination mit Akku/
valid in combination with battery pack/
valable en combinaison avec batterie
BP 18 Li 5,2 AS, BP 18 Li 6,2 AS, BP 18 Li 3,1 C
3) gilt in Kombination mit Bluetooth ® Akku/
valid in combination with Bluetooth ® battery pack/
valable en combinaison avec Bluetooth ® batterie
BP 18 Li 5,2 ASI, BP 18 Li 6,2 ASI, BP 18 Li 3,1 CI

Thanks for the answers. I'm considering picking up an AGC 18 Basic for very intermittent use. More for things like simple wire-wheeling, simple cutting, a bit of grinding...nothing major and certainly not all day use. I have a couple of 18V 3.1 ah batteries and I don't use a grinder much but it would come in handy for a few things. If I find the 3.1ah usage is not up to snuff I could always get a larger battery

Do get it. As a hobbyist, it is my second most used tool type after a drill driver.

Get a sandpaper carrier for it on day one. That is how I use it all the time. At the lowest speed it is an excellent universal sander for sharpening, deburring cut screws, you name it. I even use it for edge trimming on surfaces that will not be seen or it is not important they are perfect.
Is kinda like a having portable disc sander.

What makes all the difference is the wireless + low speed option making the sander role feasible.

I actually use it with a cut or grinding disc about 5 % of the time, maybe less.

It is kinda like a wireless RS115 without the shroud. There is a shroud available too, but needs a shim as it fits AGC 125 series ... but for small tasks here and there it is not needed and more in the way than anything.

You can give it a try, but seeing how fast the grinder sucks the life out of my brand new 5.2Ah batteries, first it's going to be HARD on the cells, and second, I wouldn't think it's suitable for anything more than touch-ups.
