OF 1010 router - micro adjuster vibrates out of pos.
« on: October 26, 2019, 04:59 PM »
Was doing some template work with a almost new 1010 router. I could literally see the micro adjuster knob spinning by itself due to vibration. The workload wasnt unfair, a 12mm plunge with 6mm bit.

Due to the spinning of the microadjuster, the cut depht would gradually be too shallow for the bit to go through.

Really annoying! Am i missing a setting for this? The depht stop is of course locked. But i couldnt find any means of locking the micro adjuster.

 [eek]

I experienced a similar problem years ago when routing deep mortices for fitting the cups in the doorjambs for multi-point security locks. I ended up disabling the micro-adjust by bottoming it out in one direction.

Not sure I follow exactly what's happening (it sounds like the micro adjust is causing the plunge depth to reduce) but 12mm depth of cut with a 6mm bit is way more than I'd be trying in one go with a 1010. Maybe I'm just a coward ;) I'd do that in 3 passes... possibly 4 with such a thin bit.

In my case I needed to get to a final depth of 25 mm with a long 12 mm bit. I did this in steps of about 5 mm each pass, but in operation, the green dial of the fine adjusment rotated due to vibration, so the setting of the depth stop, which needs to be accurate for the final pass, moved.

I had this problem a few years back. Only happened with narrow bits that would vibrate in a high pitched whine and watched the dial rotate slowly. I read somewhere on this forum that a cure was putting on another compensating washer part no. 436828 below the dial. Instead I just took off the washer, scored it and bent it slightly and that has worked. My other Of1010 (2015) has never done this as opposed to my 2012 model with the apparent exact same washer and dial parts!

Known issue, stemming from the micro adjust not having the 'click' the bigger OF have.

Festool service can add another compensating washer (as stated by @drax) to make it a bit harder to rotate, reducing the problem. Your router being 'almost new' sounds like it's still covered by service all included: I suggest you call them.

I had it done on mine, making it happen less often. Nevertheless it hasn't vanished completely, in case I need to be sure I use a piece of tape to lock the micro adjust in place. IMHO the micro adjust having no 'click' (every 1/10mm, also giving tactile feedback) to stop it from moving is a design defect - YMMV.
