Can't remove my old sanding pad
« on: July 12, 2019, 09:43 AM »
I have a 6 year old RO 159 FEQ. The sanding pad has never been replaced and the other day the foam came apart.
I bought a replacement, but I am having trouble removing the old plastic pad base. I followed the instructions but I can not get the disc to turn.
Is there something I can try in order to dislodge it?
Thanks.
Tom

If you have access to an impact driver, that's usually pretty good at freeing those bolts (it essentially shocks it loose).  If not, since the old pad is trash anyway, can you grab the pad in a vise to keep it from turning and put a socket and wrench on it?  Just make sure the bit is fully seated before you put some ooomph into it.  Alternatively you can use the supplied allen key, you just need a little more leverage (like a 1/2" pipe) over the end and you need to make sure it doesn't twist up and out of the bolt when you're applying pressure.

The RO 150 FEQ does not have a bolt but a quick release. If the pad is on there for 6 years it is lodged on very tight.

I can't think of any way but brute force here. Since the foam is gone also, there is no proper way to get a grip on the pad. You must try to get a grip on the plastic base by grabbing it with a some pliers, push the green lock button and pull very hard. Might be wise to get some help from a second person.

A few bolts or dowels the size of holes through a piece of wood that line up with holes as a key.

Alex, you nailed it. Like most things in life all it took was brute force and pliers.
I locked onto the remaining plastic disc with  vice-grips and was able to pull it around and off.
Thanks for the help.
